Isabella's heart plunged. She glanced at Victor's darkened expression, then back at her mother. Aside from being thinner and paler, Serena Valente looked exactly as she always had.
Something was wrong.
"Isabella," Serena Valente continued anxiously, "quickly go call the doctor. My eyes are blurry. I can't see clearly… Did you two put something over my eyes? Take it off quickly. I need to see Brandon. Your wedding with Brandon is coming soon. I still have so many things to tell you…"
Her voice trembled with urgency, her unfocused gaze searching desperately.
Isabella stood there in shock. Then, as she looked into her mother's unfixed eyes, understanding crashed over her like a wave.
Her throat tightened painfully. She clenched Serena Valente's hand, forcing herself not to break down, and turned toward the door.
