Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8: FALLING INTO THE ABYSS

‎The prison cell no longer felt like a cage.

‎It felt like a coffin that had failed to close.

‎Kaizen stood in the center of the stone floor, his breathing slow, uneven, as shadows crawled along the walls like living veins. The air trembled around him, responding to a presence that had only just awakened.

‎His hands shook, not from fear, but from the unfamiliar weight of something vast stirring inside him.

‎The shadow.

‎It no longer whispered from afar.

‎It was within him now.

‎"You… you're real…" Kaizen muttered.

‎The darkness responded without sound, without words, yet its meaning was unmistakable.

‎"We have always been real."

‎The iron shackles around his wrists began to creak. Black veins of shadow crawled across the metal, corroding it from within. With a sharp crack, the cuffs shattered and fell to the ground.

‎Kaizen flinched.

‎He hadn't meant to do that.

‎He stared at his hands, eyes wide.

‎"I didn't"

‎The prison alarms blared.

‎Heavy footsteps echoed beyond the door.

‎"Prisoner breach! All units respond!"

‎Kaizen swallowed.

‎His heart raced, but beneath the fear was something else.

‎A calm.

‎A terrible calm.

‎The door burst open.

‎Three Guardians rushed in, armor glowing with enchantment. Their presence filled the cell with blinding light.

‎"There he is!"

‎"Subdue him!"

‎One raised a staff, light gathering at its tip.

‎Kaizen instinctively raised his arm.

‎The shadows surged forward like a living tide.

‎The first Guardian was lifted off his feet, his scream cut short as darkness crushed his chest. Bones snapped. His body crumpled to the ground like a broken doll.

‎The second lunged forward, blade flashing.

‎Kaizen didn't move.

‎The shadow intercepted the blade, snapping it in half before coiling around the Guardian's neck. A sharp twist.

‎Silence.

‎The third Guardian froze, eyes wide with horror.

‎"Monster…" he whispered.

‎Kaizen looked at him.

‎"I didn't want this," he said quietly.

‎The shadows lunged.

‎The man never even screamed.

‎When it was over, Kaizen stood alone in the bloodstained cell, chest heaving.

‎He stared at the bodies.

‎His stomach twisted.

‎"I… killed them…"

‎His knees nearly buckled.

‎The shadows wrapped around him, not restraining, but supporting.

‎They would have killed you.

‎"I know…" he whispered. "I know…"

‎The prison shook violently as alarms screamed through the halls.

‎Kaizen turned toward the exit.

‎"I can't stay here."

‎And he walked out.

‎Chaos reigned beyond the cell.

‎Guards shouted. Prisoners screamed. Magic detonated against stone walls as emergency barriers activated.

‎Kaizen moved like a shadow between flickers of torchlight.

‎A squad of Guardians rushed down the corridor, weapons raised.

‎"Open fire!"

‎Light blasted toward him.

‎The shadows responded instantly, forming a barrier that absorbed the attack and exploded outward.

‎The corridor collapsed.

‎Dust filled the air.

‎When it cleared, only Kaizen stood.

‎His chest rose and fell rapidly. His head rang.

‎This is wrong… he thought.

‎But his feet kept moving.

‎The deeper he went, the more the prison seemed to recoil from him. Doors bent inward. Magic flickered and died.

‎At the lowest level, he felt it.

‎A presence.

‎Cold.

‎Mocking.

‎Waiting.

‎The chamber was ancient, far older than the prison itself.

‎Broken pillars lined the circular room. Faded runes pulsed faintly along the walls. At the center stood a man wrapped in a dark cloak, his face hidden beneath a hood.

‎He clapped slowly.

‎"So… the child awakens."

‎Kaizen froze.

‎"You," he whispered. "You're the one who did this."

‎The man chuckled softly. "I wondered how long it would take."

‎"You used them," Kaizen growled. "You used Riku and Hana!"

‎"They were convenient," the man replied calmly. "Weak. Easily influenced. Perfect vessels for resonance testing."

‎Kaizen's hands shook violently.

‎"You killed them."

‎The man shrugged. "Their deaths proved the artifact's compatibility. Without them, you would never have awakened."

‎Rage exploded inside Kaizen.

‎"You framed me!"

‎"Yes," the man said simply. "Someone had to take the fall. The Guardians needed a villain."

‎Kaizen stepped forward, each footstep cracking the stone beneath him.

‎"You destroyed everything I had."

‎The man tilted his head. "You should be thanking me."

‎The air twisted.

‎Kaizen vanished.

‎He reappeared before the man, shadow-blade forming in his hand.

‎The man barely raised his arm before the blade pierced his shoulder, pinning him to the wall.

‎"Tell me why," Kaizen snarled.

‎The man coughed blood. "Because the Abyss needs a vessel… and you were perfect."

‎"You killed them!" Kaizen screamed.

‎The man laughed weakly. "And now… you'll kill me too."

‎Kaizen's eyes darkened.

‎"You're right."

‎The shadows erupted, tearing through the man's body, shredding flesh and bone until nothing remained but silence.

‎Kaizen stumbled back, breath ragged.

‎At the center of the chamber, something floated.

‎A dark pendant, carved with ancient symbols.

‎The Mooncrest Talisman.

‎No,

‎The Abyssal Sigil.

‎It pulsed like a living heart.

‎As Kaizen approached, his vision blurred. Whispers flooded his mind.

‎You were chosen.

‎You are ours.

‎He reached out.

‎The moment his fingers touched it, agony surged through his body. Shadows poured into his veins like liquid fire. He screamed as visions flooded his mind, worlds collapsing, shadows devouring cities, a throne of darkness waiting.

‎The pendant wrapped itself around his neck.

‎The pain faded.

‎The power remained.

‎Kaizen dropped to one knee, gasping.

‎"I… I didn't want this…"

‎"You will need it."

‎Smoke rose into the night sky.

‎The city screamed behind him.

‎Kaizen stood at the edge of the slums, looking back one final time.

‎This place had taken everything from him.

‎His mother.

‎His friends.

‎His innocence.

‎"I'm done," he whispered.

‎He turned away.

‎Step by step, he walked into the darkness beyond Rinsho.

‎Not knowing where he was going.

‎Only knowing he could never return.

‎The wind howled as if mourning him.

‎And on his chest, the Abyssal Sigil pulsed softly.

‎Waiting.
