The palace erupted into chaos.

Moon guards sprinted across crystal bridges as dark shapes swirled around the outer rings—shadows with glowing blue eyes, screeching like broken stars. Asteria tightened her grip on Kael's hand.

"What are those things?!" she asked.

"Shadow Wraiths," Kael replied. "Assassins made of pure moon corruption."

"I hate this kingdom," she muttered.

Lunevar drew his crescent blade, shimmering like moonlight. "We must defend the core hall. If the Wraiths breach it—"

"Yes, yes, eternal doom, etcetera," Asteria interrupted. "Let's go!"

They raced across the courtyard. Asteria tried to summon a neat, controlled spell—something elegant, something that wouldn't blow up a tower.

She raised her hands. Magic surged.

Kael shouted, "Asteria, WAIT—"

Too late.

A giant wave of silver flames whooshed out, vaporizing three Wraiths—and also melting part of a decorative moon statue.

Lunevar whistled. "Impressive."

Kael glared at him. "Don't encourage her."

Asteria huffed. "Encourage me MORE."

But there was no time to argue; more Wraiths descended. One lunged directly at Asteria—a blur of claws and shadow.

Kael caught her around the waist, pulling her into him as the Wraith's strike sliced through the air where she had been.

They landed tangled together, his arm tight around her.

"Are you hurt?" Kael asked, breath warm against her cheek.

Her heart went absolutely feral.

"N-no. Just startled. And maybe dying from embarrassment."

Lunevar cleared his throat loudly. "If you two are done rolling around, we have a kingdom to save."

Kael shot him a murderous look.

Asteria pushed herself up, face red. "Right! Fighting! Yes! Very important!"

They continued toward the core hall, but as they moved, Asteria noticed the shadows thickening unnaturally—moving with intention.

Almost… obeying something.

At the center of the plaza, a massive Wraith rose, towering, its body rippling like liquid darkness.

It pointed directly at Asteria.

Kael stepped in front of her. "Why are they targeting her?!"

Lunevar's face hardened. "Because the Starweaver's power is awakening. And the Wraiths answer to the darkness that fears her."

Asteria gulped. "So basically… they're scared of me?"

"No," Lunevar said. "They want to destroy you first."

Asteria groaned. "Of course they do."

Kael gripped her hand again. "Stay close. I won't let anything touch you."

And together—prince, prophecy girl, jealous cousin, and dragon-cat—they charged toward the greatest battle yet.
