Chapter 18 - The Dust Walker’s Bargain

(Speaker: warning. new npc approaching. alignment: chaotic neutral. threat level: spicy.)

return journey silent. no singing dunes this time. dunes were... mute. as if held breath. waiting.

"too quiet," kael muttered. keeping meera close. touching her arm every few steps. grounding himself. "predator silence."

"cosmic silence," arin corrected. still pale. still shaking from pressure. "we woke something up. now it's listening."

"let it listen," meera said. gripping pack strap. journals digging into spine. proof. weight. "we have the manual now."

suddenly shape on horizon. tall. spindly. weird geometry.

"contact!" kael hissed. "weapon up!"

not jackal. not bear. not hunter. figure riding... stilts?

no. beast. creature with legs twenty feet long. thin as reeds. body suspended high in air. chitinous armor. walking strider.

and riding it... figure wrapped in gray rags. face hidden.

"dust walker," arin whispered. awe. terror. "trader of secrets. ghost clan."

strider stopped. looked down. compound eyes focusing. rider leaned over. slid down rope. graceful. liquid.

landed silently on sand. tall. taller than kael. robes shifting like smoke. face covered in mask made of... old circuit boards? bone? eyes hidden behind goggles.

"greetings, noisy ones," voice buzzed. synthesized? or just throat modification? "you rang bell very loud. landlord is awake."

"who are you?" kael demanded. stepping in front of meera. alpha shield.

"i am whisper," walker said. head tilting bird-like. "i trade in echoes. and you... you echo loudly today."

walker pointed at meera. gloved finger long. too many joints. "you smell like green fire. and old paper. and defiance."

"we just went for walk," meera lied. badly.

"walk into history. walk out with heresy," whisper laughed. scratching sound. "brave. stupid. interesting combination. my favorite flavor."

walker stepped closer. kael growled. warning rumble. whisper ignored him. focused solely on meera.

"shepherd sees you now. eyes open. gaze fixed." "so we heard," meera said. keeping voice steady. "it said hello."

"hello is just start. conversation comes next. then negotiation. then... silence." whisper leaned in. almost touching nose to mask. "silence is heavy, yes? crushed seven hundred stonebacks. will crush nineteen of you easier."

"we're not alone," meera said. "we have roots."

"ah. the gardener theory," whisper nodded. amused. "you read journal. clever girl. mahi's grandmother was smart. died lonely, but smart."

"how do you know—"

"dust walkers know. we walk dust of dead things. we hear stories stone forgets." whisper pulled back. reached into robes. pulled out small object. metallic. sphere. humming.

"trade?" whisper offered.

"what is it?"

"seed," whisper said. "from before. planting it hides you. for a while. scrambles frequency. makes weeds look like... nothing."

"what do you want for it?" kael asked. suspicious.

"memory," whisper said. "one memory. true one. painful one. give it to me. i eat it. you take seed."

"eat memory?" arin asked. horrified.

"fair trade. you forget pain. i gain sustenance."

meera looked at sphere. hiding. safety from shepherd's gaze. looked at kael. arin. pack. if she could buy them time?

"what memory?" she asked.

"betrayal," whisper said. soft. hungry. "moment mahi sold you. sharp flavor. bitter. i like bitter."

meera froze. that memory was... core wound. defined her fear. shaped her armor. give it up? forget the pain of betrayal?

would she be same person without it? would she still be guarded? careful? or would she become naive again?

"no," she said.

whisper tilted head. "no? safety for pain. good deal."

"pain is mine," meera said. clutching mother's beads. "it's part of me. it teaches me. if i forget betrayal, i might trust wrong person again. i might get pack killed."

kael exhaled. impressed.

"keep your seed," meera said. "we don't hide. we grow."

whisper stared. goggles whirring. adjusting focus. then laughed again. scratching sound getting louder.

"very brave. very stupid. very... fulcrum." walker put seed away. "no trade then. but free advice. because you entertain me."

walker pointed east. "fruit grove has guardian. not beast. remnant. old war machine. active. hungry. watch your step, gardener's weed."

walker grabbed rope. vaulted up. impossible gravity-defying leap. landed on strider.

"we will watch," whisper called down. "interesting harvest coming."

strider turned. walked away. legs stepping over dunes like they were puddles. disappearing into heat haze.

"creepy," arin summarized.

"dangerous," kael agreed. "but useful intel. war machine in grove."

"remnant," meera mused. "old tech. maybe useful too."

"you want to tame war machine?" arin asked. eyes bugging out.

"why not? we tamed dunes unless you forgot."

"you're insane," arin decided. "alpha prerogative," kael grinned. slapping arin's back. "come. home waiting."

they walked on. leaving dust walker behind. but warning stuck.

landlord is awake.harvest coming.

(Speaker: side quest declined. xp gained anyway. bold strategy cotton lets see if it pays off.)
