Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Hanging Out

"Is it just the two of us?" Silas was a little surprised.

He thought Misty Barron would call a few other friends, but this was fine too.

"Yep! Let's go." Misty Barron took Silas to the amusement park.

As soon as they entered the park, Misty took Silas straight to the roller coaster.

"Aren't you afraid of accidents on a roller coaster?" Silas hadn't expected the girl to be so daring.

Misty Barron shook her head confidently. "No, the basic components of a roller coaster are the train, the track, the circuits, the motors, and the control room. This is a classic gravity-powered inertia coaster with a loop track..."

"And the probability of an accident happening is about one in one and a half billion, or even less. Simply put, instead of worrying about an accident on a roller coaster, you should be more worried about getting into a car crash on the street."

Just as Misty Barron finished speaking, the roller coaster was ready and slowly began to move.

Silas, sitting next to Misty, stared blankly straight ahead. Who am I? Where am I?

After the roller coaster ended, Misty Barron excitedly threw her hands up. "That felt great! What did you think, Silas?"

"It was alright," Silas smoothed down his hair. He had spent the entire ride contemplating what Misty had said before the ride started.

"It's not time for lunch yet, so let's go play a little more," Misty said, checking the watch on her wrist.

"Sounds good," Silas snapped out of his thoughts. He didn't care; compared to his brother Peter, he was completely uninterested in academics.

The two stopped as they passed a shooting target game.

"Hey~ Beautiful lady, want to bring your boyfriend over and take a few shots? The prizes are pretty good~" the booth owner shouted, waggling his eyebrows.

For Misty Barron, who wasn't short on cash, the prizes weren't a rarity, but the fun was in participating!

"Silas, do you want to play?" Misty Barron asked.

"I..." Silas was about to think about it.

The booth owner shouted, "Come on! Strong young man, give your girlfriend a surprise!"

"Alright," Silas didn't know what to get Misty, and winning one of these prizes was a good opportunity to give her a gift.

"Welcome to the game. Five dollars for ten shots," the owner said, extending his hand with a happy look, ready to collect the money.

"Here you go," Misty Barron paid the five dollars without hesitation.

The owner happily accepted the money and said, "Good luck to you both."

Silas hadn't expected Misty to pay before he could. It was supposed to be a gift from him, and now she was spending her own money.

"It's fine. Help me shoot down the big bear," Misty Barron seemed to guess what Silas was thinking and pointed to the largest prize, a huge bear, at the back.

"Don't worry!" Silas loaded the toy gun (for clarification, it was a toy gun), aiming at the number for the furthest bear.

His finger slowly tightened on the trigger switch. He aimed intently at the target, then quickly fired!

Bang!

"Too bad, you almost got it. Keep going," Misty Barron encouraged him.

That shot hit the number 38 next to the big bear's number. The big bear was number 39, but 38 was a small prize, too.

"Keep it up, young man," the booth owner said comfortably, sitting on his chair. To him, even if they took the big bear, he wouldn't lose money.

He got these prizes from a friend who owned a plush toy company; these were all surplus items.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

In the next few shots, Silas only narrowly missed the target. It wasn't until the eighth shot that he hit the number 39. He simply fired the remaining two shots randomly.

"Congratulations, young man," the booth owner brought over the prizes, with the toy bear, encased in a transparent plastic bag, being particularly conspicuous.

Silas sized it up and found the toy bear was about one meter seventy (5'7") tall.

Misty Barron happily accepted the toy bear from the owner. "Haha~ It's mine now."

"But it looks like it'll be inconvenient to carry around while we play," Silas noted.

"I know," Misty Barron took out a phone from her pocket. "Come over to my spot."

Soon, two burly men in plain clothes arrived next to Misty Barron.

"You two put these in the car," Misty Barron handed all the prizes to the bodyguards.

The bodyguards immediately took their orders, picked up the prizes, and left.

"They were here the whole time?" Silas hadn't expected Misty Barron to bring two bodyguards with her.

"They were waiting outside. I specifically called them today to help me carry things."

Misty Barron looked at the time. "It's getting late. Should we go eat?"

"Sure, I used up some energy just now," Silas replied, having skipped breakfast earlier.

"I know a restaurant with great food. Let's go!" Misty Barron led the way for Silas.

"Mhm." Silas soon followed Misty Barron to a restaurant.

The two ordered a large seafood platter and some juice, then sat down.

"Silas, do you like mechanics?" Misty Barron opened the conversation.

Silas propped his head up. "I like it, but I don't think I have the talent for it. I can't build anything."

Silas had originally wanted to build a small mechanical arm himself but had failed, regrettably.

"It sounds like you've tried to build something?" Misty Barron asked, intrigued.

Silas sat up straight. "I tried. I made a small mechanical arm, but something went wrong. It couldn't move and just kept shaking."

"It's probably a problem with your power system, which prevents the arm from operating correctly," Misty Barron offered her conjecture immediately.

"That might be it," Silas couldn't help but twitch his mouth. He hadn't paid much attention to those details back then.

He had cobbled the parts together according to the blueprints, spending a full six months on it, only for it to fail.

Soon, the food was served. They finished their lunch while chatting, and Misty Barron left a tip for the waiter before leading Silas out.

Evening

"It was a good day. Let's hang out again next time," Misty Barron was the first to say goodbye.

Silas nodded. "Sounds good. See you later."

"See you," Misty Barron said, then got into her car.

"It's finally over. I'm so tired." Silas's exhaustion for the day wasn't physical; it was mental.

The most talked-about topic all day was mechanics. It was tough on Silas, the academic slacker.

If they were going to talk about mechanics, why didn't they just go to the mechanical exhibition? He might have even run into Peter Parker.

At Home

"You're back?" Aunt May was just about to clear the dinner table when she heard the door open.

"How was your day out, young man?" Ben Parker lowered his newspaper and asked.

Silas replied, "It was fun, just very tiring."

"It's good to get out and about. And Peter was looking for you as soon as he got back," Ben Parker smiled.

"Looking for me?" Silas asked, confused.

"Do you want something to eat? There's still some pizza. I can heat it up for you," Aunt May asked, concerned.

Silas thanked her. "Thank you, Aunt May, but I don't need anything. I'm very full. I'll go upstairs now."

"Alright," Aunt May said.

Upstairs

"Peter, you were looking for me?" Silas opened Peter Parker's door.

When Peter Parker heard Silas's voice, he got excited. "My brother, you're finally back! You wouldn't believe it, I took so many interesting pictures today with the camera you gave me."

"Oh yeah? Congratulations then," Silas was surprised that this was what Peter wanted, but he was happy for him.

"Thanks. Where were you today?" Peter Parker asked.

Silas walked into the room and sat on the bed. "The amusement park."

"The amusement park?! You went there to hang out! I wish I'd asked you to take me," Peter Parker said regretfully.

While he really enjoyed the mechanical exhibition, for a kid his age, hanging out was still more fun.

"Get out of here," Silas thought. He didn't want a shiny third wheel to tag along.

Now, Silas was just waiting for the next tech exhibition!
