Chapter 6 - The Traitor

"Leading...the group?"

"Yes, you've proved yourself . Others respect you. I'm older. People need someone younger and stronger."

"No...no, I can't. I'm not a leader, Tom. I'm a survivor. I barely made it by myself . I'm not perfect."

"that's the point, It's not about being perfect. It's about doing the right thing. You've already did."

He moves closer, lowering his voice.

"And besides, I think Maggie would follow you anywhere. With her by your side, I know you'll be a great leader."

Kenny looking at Maggie. She's laughing with Sarah as they carry boxes of food. Her eyes meet his, and she smiles.

"I don't know if I'm ready for this."

Tom pats him on the shoulder again before walking away.

"You're stronger than you think, Kenny. And this group needs you...take some time."

As the sun begins to set, Kenny finds himself sitting alone outside the fence.

As Kenny sat lost in thought, he heard footsteps approaching. He turned to see Maggie walking towards him.

She sat down beside him, close enough for their shoulders to touch.

"Hey, you've been here for a while."

"Just thinking"

"About what Tom said?"

Kenny's eyes widened in surprise.

"Did he tell you?"

"He said he wants me to help you."

Kenny's eyebrows shot up in surprise.

"He did?"

he asked, astonished.

Maggie smiled gently and took his hand.

"Yes, he sees something in you."

She squeezed his hand softly.

"I see it too. You're brave, and smart."

"I'm Scared... , scared to let everyone down."

"You won't. You didn't let me down, not once. And I know you won't let them either."

She moved even closer, her forehead pressed against his head.

"We'll do this together, you and I, side by side. like always."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

The next day, everyone begins their daily routine. David and Lisa tend to the small garden they planted in a corner of the yard.

Sarah and Mark are on guard duty.

Tom and Maggie are overseeing the distribution of supplies from the loot.

Kenny is wandering around the warehouse.

He examines the back wall and notices something unusual: part of the fence has been hastily and haphazardly repaired.

"Something's not right here."

He pulls back a panel and finds a large hole in the wall.

Large enough for someone to pass through.

He realizes that someone has been going in and out of the warehouse without their knowledge.

"The question is... who? And why?"

He stares at the hole for a while, then replaces the panel.

Kenny goes back through the warehouse looking for Maggie. He finds her helping Tom distribute the supplies.

"Maggie, can I talk to you for a second ?"

"Of course."

Maggie follows Kenny away.

"What is it ?"

Kenny leads her to a quiet corner of the warehouse.

"I found something, a hidden entrance behind the warehouse. Someone's been coming and going without our knowledge."

Maggie's eyes widen in shock.

"What?... Who would...?"

"I don't know, but I intend to find out."

He moves closer, his voice lowering.

"I need your help, Maggie. We can't let anyone else know what we've found. Not until we know who's behind it."

"Of course."

As night falls, everyone begins to sleep.

Kenny lies down, eyes closed, pretending to be asleep. Suddenly, a sharp scream echoes through the night, coming from behind the warehouse.

Kenny sits up slowly, careful not to wake Maggie beside him.

He takes his knife and heads toward the warehouse door.

As he steps outside, the scream returns, this time louder and closer. It comes from the direction of the hidden entrance he discovered earlier.

Kenny runs toward the sound. As he approaches the wall, he sees someone stumbling away from the hole—a man covered in blood.

"Help me, please..."

As Kenny gets closer to the man, he recognizes him instantly.

It's David. The man who's been secretly betraying them all along.

David looks at Kenny, terrified.

"Kenny, you have to help me. They're coming."

Kenny's grip on his knife tightens, his anger rising.

"You, you're the traitor."

David trembles and sobs.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean for any of this to happen. I had to do it."

Kenny's hand reaches out quickly, grabbing David and pulling him to his feet.

With his other hand, he pulls a gun from his waistband.

He points the gun at David's forehead and presses down hard, his eyes blazing with fury.

"You betrayed us. You put all our lives in danger."

"I'm sorry. I had no choice."

Kenny's finger is on the trigger. He wants to pull it, to end this traitor's life right here, right now.

Instead, he turns David around and shoves him toward the warehouse.

"Inside, now."

Kenny pulls David into the warehouse.

The others wake up from the commotion.

Maggie looks at them, confused.

"Kenny? What's going on?"

Kenny pushes David to his knees, putting a gun to his head.

"Talk. Tell them what you told me."

David looks at the group.

"I... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to betray you, but... but they threatened my family."

"What are you talking about?" she asks.

Lisa's voice trembles.

"Another group. They wanted to take everything you have for themselves. They said if I helped them, they wouldn't hurt my sister."

Tom steps forward.

"And what exactly did you do to help them?"

"I... I told them about our defenses, the routes and locations we use to access supplies, our patrol schedules. I even let them use that hidden entrance behind the warehouse to scout the place."

Kenny's grip tightens on the pistol, his finger trembling on the trigger.

"How many? How many groups did you betray?"

"Four, before I came here."

David's voice trembles as he speaks, his eyes darting nervously between Kenny and the others.

"They... wanted me to blow the warehouse. To make it look like an accident, so they could step in and take control."

"I'm supposed to bring the dead in here and blow the place up in the chaos."

Silence fills the warehouse. Kenny's finger tightens on the trigger.

But before he can pull it, Maggie steps forward. She glares at David.

"You're disgusting. You were willing to kill us all just to save yourself."

She turns to Kenny.

"Let me handle this."

She turns back to David with a chillingly cold smile.

"You'll fix this, on my way."
