Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Preparing for Deployment

Three days had passed since Kars and Joseph arrived in this world.

After giving his report that day, Rojin had stopped paying attention to the matter.

The Agency had its own dedicated personnel to communicate with Joseph. Rojin had nothing to worry about.

Everyone within the Organization held great trust in its capabilities.

Naturally, so did Rojin.

In the following days, Rojin returned to a quiet routine.

He attended school as usual, chatted with Sakamoto, and occasionally spoke with Sakura, who sat behind him.

So far, they seemed to get along quite well.

Tomoya remained full of passion for his club.

Somehow, he managed to recruit the extremely famous beauty, Sawamura Eriri, into the club.

In theory, as long as a student didn't join more than three clubs, the school allowed it.

But in reality, almost no one joined multiple clubs.

After all, if one rarely attended meetings, they might get kicked out.

To be honest, this incident caused quite a stir on campus.

It was said that at first Eriri didn't want her club membership revealed.

But for some reason, it spread anyway.

Even though she desperately explained that she was only helping draw original art, plenty of rumors still emerged.

She was said to be very troubled by it.

This peaceful routine lasted until the afternoon after school.

"Not going to the club today?"

Sakamoto, while packing his books, looked at Rojin with surprise.

For the past several days, Rojin always went to the club after school, even if only to sit around playing on his phone.

"Yeah, I have part-time work today."

Grabbing his bag, Rojin checked his books to make sure nothing was left behind.

"Then see you tomorrow."

After greeting Sakamoto and Sakura, Rojin left the classroom in large strides.

The two quietly watched his departing figure.

Both of them tacitly refrained from asking about his part-time job.

They knew Rojin had a "part-time job," though he never said a word about what it actually was.

Since he didn't want to talk, they wouldn't ask.

"What's the situation over there now?"

Jogging out of the school gate, Rojin made a call.

He had originally planned to buy his favorite juice, then spend time in the club room until it was time to go home.

Honestly, he enjoyed this slow-paced lifestyle.

But then he received a message.

An anomaly had been discovered in a nearby factory.

External operatives from the Agency had already sealed off the area and secured civilians.

However, most of the Agency's internal personnel were currently tied up dealing with a dangerous anomaly elsewhere, leaving them short-handed.

By local custom, the Chiba branch's site director might have to prepare an apology after this.

Of course, that was just a joke.

Under normal circumstances, no such thing would happen.

But the Chiba Research Institute's special-operations division had recently lost many operatives while suppressing an extremely dangerous anomaly, leaving the branch understaffed.

Though reinforcements were being transferred, it would take a few more days before normal operations resumed.

"Got it, I'm heading over now."

To be honest, Rojin always felt it was ridiculous to entrust such matters to a high school student.

The Agency's nature meant most of its members were elites among elites.

Even the research staff were highly esteemed in their respective fields.

As for the D-class personnel—if prisoners could communicate freely—they were the kind of scumbags who would be beaten to death by an angry crowd if left outside.

Compared to them, Rojin…

He felt his position was awkward.

He was labeled as a combatant, but no proper supervisor would truly let a high schooler risk his life.

Sending him to the relatively peaceful Chiba branch was, at its core, to protect him.

Perhaps one day he would shine in containment missions.

But not now.

The Agency was nowhere near desperate enough to require children to die for the world.

This troubled Rojin.

He was strong, certainly not as strong as the true monsters in the Agency, but still elite-tier.

Even with his frustrations, he obeyed orders.

He understood the higher-ups' mindset.

Ultimately, he was just a high schooler who happened to gain power.

He still had a long way to go before becoming a hero.

"So this is why you threw him to Chiba, Director Theresa?"

A maid carrying a stack of documents stood beside a small white-haired nun.

Though dressed as a maid, her relationship with Theresa clearly wasn't just boss and servant.

"Of course."

Feeling guilty, Theresa shifted in her chair, trying to push the manga hidden under her desk into a gap using her short legs.

But no matter how hard she tried, her feet couldn't reach the floor.

Rita said nothing. She leaned down, and under Theresa's despairing gaze, pulled out two manga volumes.

Both were from the Homo series.

'I'm throwing out this cursed chair later.'

Completely ignoring the fact that she had forcibly taken this chair from Kiana to look more authoritative as director.

Theresa now thoroughly hated the chair that had caused her to lose all dignity.

Normally, with her hand speed, she could easily hide the manga before Rita entered.

But she had been reviewing a report from another branch, and forgot.

By the time she remembered, it was too late.

"Risking your life is an adult's responsibility. Children should just attend school and build their future."

"The future belongs to them. The present belongs to us."

Theresa cleared her throat, trying to restore some semblance of authority as director.

In reality, among the other high-ranking members, she had absolutely no authority at all.

In private "mascot rankings," Theresa consistently earned first place.

Although she herself may not like it very much.

"Alright, alright, I'll take my leave then, Director."

With a slight bow, Rita walked out while taking Theresa's manga away under Theresa's despairing gaze.

Leaning lifelessly against the back of her chair, Theresa felt her dignity slipping further and further away.

"No, no, this isn't the time to be discouraged!"

After spacing out for a moment, Theresa suddenly bounced up from her chair.

She grabbed a document at random and started working hard.

Today, Theresa continued her struggle to maintain the dignity of a director.
