Chapter 21 - Unbroken Until the End

Jack shielded yumiel with his massive body, preventing the hunter from attacking her head-on. yumiel took the opportunity to put her blood back into her flask, deactivating her senses.

« I'm leaving him to you. »

« Wait, can't you do something about this fog? » Yumiel gathered her last remaining strength. Pulling the blood from her flask and swirling it through the air, absorbing the surrounding fog, then storing her blood back into the flask.

« There, you have about three minutes before the fog returns. »

The hunter was now exposed but still moved at great speed, trying to reach yumiel, but Jack placed himself in front of her with his massive body, tanking the blows. Then he charged on his four powerful legs, crushing everything in his path at a speed over 40 km/h.

The hunter tried to dodge, however Jack caught him thanks to his numerous arms. He slammed him into the ground, then followed up with a barrage of punches. The hunter tried to defend himself as best he could, before pulling out a blade, slicing off Jack's lower left arm, then stepping back a few meters.

The hunter was badly beaten up. He pulled out another syringe, except this time Jack gave him no time to breathe. Charging at full speed. Jack managed to intercept him, launching him several meters away, dropping the syringe.

The hunter stood up again. « What on earth are you made of? You should be at death's door. »

While getting up, the hunter picked up the hat that had fallen near him, placing it back on his head.

« I will never bow before the filth of creatures like you. For in the darkness, I shall be the light that burns you, so fear me. »

The fog was beginning to return.

« You talk too much, old man, let me set you straight. »

Jack charged, the hunter sent two metal discs which Jack dodged by throwing himself to the side. During the dodge, the hunter pulled out a syringe. Jack could no longer intercept him—ever since he had four legs, he had gained speed and power but lost mobility.

At least, that would be true for a normal zombie. Jack broke one of his legs, propelling himself forward with brute force, shooting straight toward the hunter. He tried to inject himself with the syringe, but Jack arrived just in time. Landing a flurry of punches.

The hunter held his ground, blocking and withstanding Jack's blows. « JUST FALL ALREADY! » Jack broke the limiter on his upper right arm. Striking directly into the hunter's guard. Forcing him onto one knee, making him spit a large amount of blood.

Jack continued hitting him with his three remaining arms. He was left with only his lower right and central arms, plus the upper left one. Yet, despite the brutal blows he was taking, the hunter stood back up.

« This is impossible. HOW ARE YOU STANDING BACK UP?! » The hunter kept rising slowly despite the violent assault. Continuing to shield himself with his arms.

« Ah ah ah, how, huh? » The hunter paused, standing fully upright, planting both feet firmly into the ground.

« In the shadow of moonless nights, where creatures lurk and whisper, no monster shall escape my hunt. Let them tremble before my blade, for I am the hunter… »

Now fully upright, he drew his blade, slicing off one of Jack's feet. Making him lose his balance, the hunter seized the moment to slice off his lower right arm. Then he dove under Jack, grabbing the serum and injecting himself.

Jack tried to crush him with his foot. Yet, even while lying down, the hunter grabbed Jack's foot, twisted him over, rose to his feet while holding onto it, and with Herculean strength hurled him several meters into the sky. Jack was now far above ground. The hunter threw his last remaining discs, cutting off Jack's last usable arms and legs.

Jack was now nothing more than a literal torso. No arms or legs, falling. Toward the ground, the hunter awaited him, slicing his head clean off at the neck. Jack's head rolled along the ground. Leaving nothing but his dismembered body scattered here and there.

The hunter collapsed heavily onto the ground. His body began to tremble. His head spinning, he vomited blood. « Fucking side effects. »

yumiel finally returned, only to see the hunter on the ground and Jack's head lying there. She didn't hesitate for a second, launching a crystal blade straight at the hunter.

The hunter managed to dodge it, though he almost stumbled. yumiel wasn't at her best either—she had just recovered and still felt weak.

« You managed to kill Jack? How did you do it, bastard?! »

The hunter spat a large mouthful of blood. « Don't worry, you'll be next. »

« The next my ass, start by doing your job properly. Asshole. » Yumiel approached Jack's head, crouched down, picked it up, then stood.

« AH LET ME GO HELP ME YUMIEL. » Yumiel turned her head toward his face.

« Oh, yumiel, it's you, I'm so happy to see you, that bastard cut my head off while saying incomprehensible crap. »

The hunter stared at the scene, completely dumbfounded.

« Yeah, asshole, Jack is a zombie. As long as his brain isn't damaged, he can't die. You should've studied your lessons better, ahahah. »

The hunter grimaced with rage. Radiating murderous intent, clenching his teeth against each other until they scraped. « Ah ah, I just have to do it again, and this time I won't miss. I'll cut you into tiny pieces. »

yumiel didn't waste time, sending her three blood blades at the hunter.

« Yes, that's it, yumiel, do it to him, beat him up, go on, kill him. »

« I'm trying, but I need to concentrate. »

The hunter dodged and shattered yumiel's blades, but she reformed them instantly. The action repeated in a loop. It was now nothing but an endurance match; the first to fall would lose the battle.

« Oh no, he dodged. Wait, I can't see the fight well, can you position me better? »

« Jack, I need to CONCENTRATE, so shut up. »

The fight lasted on, but neither wanted to give in. yumiel was reaching her limits, and the hunter had nothing left except his battered body. yumiel considered attacking in close combat, but that would leave Jack unprotected. And she still struggled to synchronize her blades while moving her body during combat.

« Say, do you think you're going to win? »

« OH SHUT THE HELL UP, I almost regret saving you. »

yumiel now focused solely on a plan of action.
