Chapter 27 - Before Nightfall

The document in question said it would reveal a new global reform soon.

« It was to be expected with China's declaration on the first day… »

« So what do we do », said Jack, looking at Yumiel, who had her eyes fixed on the PC.

« What do we do? It's obvious. We're going to become stronger, we still have time before nightfall. »

« Alright, we'll meet a little before nightfall to debrief on how we organize ourselves », Yumiel approved, going back to training.

Yumiel was very diligent in her training, yet it wasn't enough, she felt she needed to become stronger. And for that, she needed to kill, preferably changelings.

Yumiel started another study topic, still using her blood, but this time to calculate how much she could create with 1 liter of blood. Creating a multitude of shapes, writing down in her notebook the amount needed to make them.

« So let's see, with 1 liter I can make about three swords, a wall takes about 1 liter, a dagger 200 ml. » Yumiel made different shapes, noting the required quantity for the most useful ones.

It didn't take her much time, but she judged it necessary.

Marie watched Yumiel from afar, training her blood control. She approached very quietly and then grabbed Yumiel's old pajamas, pulling slightly to make her understand she was hungry.

« I'm coming, I'm coming », Yumiel stood up and then took out the gratin from the morning, reheating it and serving it to Marie.

Yumiel stared at Marie and sighed slightly. Once her plate was finished, she gave Yumiel a hug before going back to Jack.

Continuing her training. Time passed and Yumiel's progress wasn't really improving, she felt limited as if she couldn't improve anymore.

Feeling discouraged, she went to see Jack.

« Wow, you've really made good progress. » The wall was deeply dug, enough to fit several people inside.

« I do not feel fatigue so I can work tirelessly, also keep in mind that I am stronger than a human. »

« Alright. I've thought of a plan for tonight. First, I need a new outfit, I don't have clothing suitable for big movements. Then, we need to manage to kill a changeling. We also need to keep finding information about my friends. Oh and I also have to check if the anti-monster organization really cleared out or not. »

Jack finished the few remaining pickaxe hits before turning around.

« I approve, we must become stronger and killing a changeling is the best way to do that. Besides, I might have someone who can help you with your outfit. And I'll need tools and raw materials to continue working. »

Yumiel sighed just thinking about everything they needed to do that night.

« You sigh a lot, I feel like? Not a good habit to pick up. »

Yumiel felt like she was seeing, at that moment, her homeroom teacher, Mr. Adam, constantly nagging her to stop sighing for no reason.

« Hahaha, sorry, bad habit. »

Jack was surprised by Yumiel's reaction and her laugh, which sounded nostalgic.

« What's so funny? »

« … Nothing, you just reminded me of someone. We'll meet in the living room in about 2 hours to get ready to leave. »

Yumiel didn't give up, continuing to train her control over more than four different blood shapes simultaneously.

Time passed quickly, and daylight was soon going to give way to darkness. Yumiel went upstairs, opened the weapon rack, taking back a Taurus .357 Magnum, which was also the last magnum in the rack. Her holster was damaged but she decided to keep it since there were only two, leaving the other to Jack.

She went back downstairs, leaving the rack open. Marie was already on the couch, taking care of her weapon, checking ammunition, chamber, magazine. Jack was next to her, tinkering with some stuff on the table, then headed to his room to change before going to see what Jack was doing.

« What are you doing? »

Jack looked up to see Yumiel dressed very simply: a black t-shirt with her holster around her, sweatpants and sneakers. Jack whispered: « Indeed, you need a new outfit. »

« I'm making walkie-talkies with a single frequency, allowing us to communicate if we must separate. »

Yumiel watched Jack work, going at a monstrous speed, not understanding much of what he was doing. The only thing she could handle in tinkering was making bombs with a detonator.

« You're really fast, tell me, how come you're so good? All this isn't amateur or weekend handyman level anymore, you even talked about building a fully equipped room. »

Jack finished connecting the wires to the power supply before answering Yumiel.

« I ate a lot of brains in the cemetery. Most had huge skills in construction and technology. I can practically do anything, whether it's building a structure or even making a production machine, maybe even creating a robot. »

Useful, thought Yumiel « anyway, despite all that, you're still as dumb. »

« Says the science nut. Maybe I should eat your brain to become smarter? »

I'm not… Ah forget it, an idiot remains an idiot. If you go upstairs and down the hall, you'll find a weapon rack, take whatever you want from there. »

Leaving, letting Jack finish what he was doing. She sat on the couch next to Marie, who cuddled up against Yumiel, holding her tight. Yumiel didn't hug her back but stroked her hair.

She was starting to get too attached to her, thought Yumiel, it's not bad to get attached but she didn't want to put her in danger. And getting attached like she was would harm one or the other someday.

Jack had time to finish the walkies and gear up upstairs. Going to get Yumiel on the couch, he saw Marie cuddled against Yumiel and Yumiel stroking her hair. Seeing Jack, Yumiel stood up and joined him.

« Are you ready? » Jack was carrying an SA-80 attached by a sling, and a Glock stored in his holster with a few spare magazines.

« Almost, where can I find large enough backpacks that will allow me to collect tools or materials »

In the hall, Yumiel showed him where the backpacks were, Jack grabbed one and slipped the walkies inside. Yumiel had gone to get her flask which she filled to the brim with blood and attached to her holster, then waited in the hall for the sun to fully set.
