Brave Sun hunted the chaos beasts that strayed too close. He laughed when he fought. He loved the crunch of bones.
Starry Wisdom studied the stars and the winds. She smiled when she solved a riddle. She loved the silence of thought.
For a time, it was paradise.
But paradise is boring to those who did not suffer to reach it.
Brave Sun grew restless. "Father, why do we stay in the Valley? I want to conquer the Fog."
Starry Wisdom grew bored. "Father, why is the sky blue? I want to take it apart and see how it works."
Noax saw the Seed of Ambition sprouting in their hearts.
He called them together. "I will give you a gift," he said.
He reached into the void and pulled out a golden fruit.
"This is the Fruit of Satisfaction," Noax said. "If you eat it, you will never want for anything again."
Brave Sun looked at the fruit. "If I eat it, will I stop wanting to fight?"
"Yes," Noax said.
Starry Wisdom looked at the fruit. "If I eat it, will I stop wanting to know?"
"Yes," Noax said.
The children looked at each other.
"We do not want it," they said.
Noax dropped the fruit. It rotted instantly, turning into black sludge. From the sludge rose a shapeless black mist. This was Dissatisfaction. It entered the children's hearts, and they smiled.
