Chapter 12 - WALKERS OF THE REFLECTION SOIL

Ash-Veil Dungeon — Floor 2, Descent into the Deep Region

Aras watched the miniboss's body sink into the grey earth as the hum of the Blue Ring filled the tunnel. Cold air made the moisture on the walls tremble and slide upward.

He was no longer stepping on dry ash.The ground beneath him was now spongy grey memory-tissue, shifting with each footfall, almost breathing. And with each step he took…

…another, faint, delayed set of footsteps echoed beside his own.

He stopped.The sound stopped too.

He was alone—but being watched.

The Grey Ring rotated once at the center of his chest. Aras had learned what that meant:

Danger was not approaching.Danger was examining him.

A thin system-line slit through the darkness:

░░ SYSTEM MESSAGE ░░ "Entry to Floor 2 inner layer confirmed.""This floor contains the Blue Ring's memory-reflection trial.""Grey Ring → Partial resistance to perception distortions applied."

Aras felt something he couldn't explain:This floor did not dig through the past.It hunted the brief, half-formed thoughts that flickered inside a person's mind.

THE FOUR-WAY CROSSING — The Mind's Division Point

The tunnel opened suddenly into four diverging paths, each with its own scent:

Left Path: cold metal

Right Path: moldy memory

Forward: dry, sharp wind

Fourth Path:no scent at all

The scentless path made Aras's stomach tense. If something wasn't hidden, it smelled.A path with no scent at all… was a trap.

The System agreed:

░░ SYSTEM MESSAGE ░░ "Choice: UNKNOWN.""Optimal route selected for perception testing."

Aras tightened his grip on the Clawblade.

If this layer wanted the unknown…he would walk straight into it.

FIRST CREATURE GROUP — Ash-Memory Walkers (Ash-Drifters)

The moment he stepped inside the scentless corridor, the mist thickened.

Two shapes separated from the fog.Human-like.Walking slowly.

Then Aras noticed their faces—or rather, the absence of them.

Hollow masks.Stolen faces from his own memories, wiped clean.

Three more emerged.Total: 5 Drifters.

Their hands flickered with blue-grey vibrating claws, tuned to slice memory.

░░ SYSTEM WARNING ░░ "Threat: Memory Hunters.""Attack Type: Perception Shift + Memory Erasure.""Grey Ring Resistance: 40%."

Aras raised his blade.

The Drifters moved simultaneously.

COMBAT — Fracture of Perception

The first Drifter lunged—and the world inverted.

For a heartbeat, Aras felt himself jump forward…yet his body slid backward. The image stuttered twice.

Reality rewound half a second.

"What—what's happening!?"

The Grey Ring spun sharply.

A single pulse.Reality snapped back into place.

Now Aras could see the rhythm of the creature's claws—blue light blinking at a frequency designed to cut memory.

He dodged sideways and swung.

SHRRK—The Clawblade left a thin shadow-ripple behind as the Drifter's torso split in two.

The next pair attacked.Aras's Shadow Reflex triggered—

—not a feline lunge this time, but a long, cracking line of darkness erupting from his waist, shoving him out of harm's way.

He capitalized on it instantly.

One slash tore open a Drifter's belly.Another upward strike split the second from chin to crown.

By the time the last two fell apart, Aras's breathing had grown deep and uneven.

This floor was not tiring his body.It was draining his mind.

DROPS

The Drifters dissolved into grey dust, leaving behind orbs.

Aras exhaled slowly.

"This floor is trying to tear my mind apart. But I'm still here."

The ground trembled in response.

COLLAPSE OF THE FLOOR

The earth stretched beneath him—cracking like an overtaxed memory.

Grey light seeped between the fractures.

Aras attempted to leap back—too late.

The entire floor split like a torn photograph.

The Grey Ring expanded, cocooning him, slowing his fall until his feet touched a lower, softer layer.

A layer the dungeon had deliberately dropped him into.

MID REGION — Labyrinth of Blue Reflections

The walls were veined with channels of drifting memory-droplets.Blue lights pulsed like a heartbeat.

The tunnel breathed.

And something answered that breath.

Not a larva.Not a Drifter.

Something higher.

Something built for mental destruction.

CREATURE 2 — ASH MIND-SPLITTER

It had a humanoid outline—but its face was a spiraling void.

A blue-grey vortex, turning, trembling, hungry to rip thoughts out of the mind.

░░ SYSTEM SCAN ░░ "Threat Class: B+""Attack Type: Mind-Splitting.""Grey Ring → Partial Resistance."

Aras raised his blade.

The creature vanished.

It reappeared behind him—not striking with claws, but with a thought.

A mental blow hit the back of Aras's skull.

His mind split into two selves:

One desperate to flee. One desperate to attack.

For a moment, he felt like two people trapped in one body.

The Grey Ring darkened—then pulsed twice.

The mental fracture shattered.

Aras spun and slashed—

The Clawblade cracked the vortex-face.

The creature trembled…then split into two versions of itself:

A physical shadow-body

A mental echo-body

The shadow attacked with claws. The echo tried to yank loose Aras's thoughts.

Aras fought both.

When the mental body moved, he split again—two impulses, two wills—

—but the Grey Ring crushed the pressure.

His vision cleared.

The physical body lunged.Aras twisted, swung upward, and—

THRRK—

A grey streak of shadow surged along the blade, adding vicious speed to the strike.

The Splitter's physical form split apart. Its mental echo dissolved into a silent cloud of blue smoke.

Aras dropped to one knee.

"This one… was made just to break me."

But he was still standing.

END OF CHAPTER — The Approaching Guardian

The walls dimmed. The blue veins went dark. The ground stopped breathing.

The air turned heavy.

For the first time, the Grey Ring whispered:

"The true Blue Guardian is approaching."

Aras raised his blade.

A dull grey spark flickered around his feet—his Shadow Reflex preparing itself.

The dungeon was about to open its most dangerous trial yet.

And Aras finally understood:

Every thought he lost herewould cost him something real.
