Chapter 30 - Eyes in the Shadows

The night air of Manhattan felt colder than before.

Bruce Carter stepped out of the skyscraper lobby beside Victor Hale, the glass doors closing quietly behind them. The street outside glowed under rows of streetlights while traffic moved slowly through the busy avenue.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

The meeting had ended.

But the conversation between their minds was far from over.

Victor adjusted his coat slightly as he looked toward the road.

"You handled that discussion well."

Bruce glanced up at him.

"You expected less?"

Victor smiled faintly.

"I expected caution."

Bruce shrugged.

"You got it."

Victor chuckled softly.

"Yes, I did."

A black car pulled up to the curb.

Victor's driver stepped out and opened the door.

Victor looked down at Bruce again.

"For now, our ceasefire stands."

Bruce nodded.

"For now."

Victor's eyes held a trace of amusement.

"I look forward to seeing what you build, Bruce Carter."

Bruce replied calmly.

"Likewise."

Victor entered the car.

The vehicle pulled away smoothly and disappeared into the Manhattan traffic.

Bruce stood alone on the sidewalk.

But only for a moment.

Because he wasn't alone.

Across the street, parked in the shadows, Luna Carter sat inside a dark car with her eyes locked on him.

Her silver gaze shifted from Bruce to the car that had just left.

"That man…"

She whispered.

"…who is he?"

Her instincts told her something important had just happened.

Something far beyond a simple meeting.

Bruce stepped toward the waiting Carter security vehicle.

But before getting in, he glanced briefly across the street.

Directly toward Luna's car.

For a split second, their eyes met.

Luna froze.

"Did he see me?"

Bruce's expression didn't change.

He entered the car calmly.

The vehicle began moving toward the Carter estate.

Inside the car, Bruce leaned back against the seat.

"Of course she followed."

Luna had always been the most observant among his sisters.

He had expected this possibility.

Bruce closed his eyes.

The city lights passed across the window beside him.

Victor Hale had made his move.

Now the game had changed again.

Back at the Carter estate.

The mansion lights glowed warmly in the distance as Bruce's car approached the front gate.

The gates opened automatically.

The vehicle rolled inside.

Bruce stepped out calmly and walked toward the mansion entrance.

But the moment he stepped inside—

He saw Luna waiting.

She leaned casually against the wall with her arms crossed.

But her expression was anything but casual.

"Good walk?"

Bruce raised an eyebrow.

"Not bad."

Luna pushed herself off the wall and stepped closer.

"You went all the way to Manhattan."

Bruce didn't react.

"That's still a walk."

Luna sighed.

"You're terrible at lying."

Bruce chuckled softly.

"I'm not lying."

"Then who was the man?"

Bruce paused slightly.

Luna's silver eyes were sharp.

Focused.

Waiting.

Bruce looked toward the staircase briefly.

Then back at Luna.

"Someone interesting."

Luna crossed her arms again.

"That's the second time you've used that phrase today."

Bruce smiled faintly.

"Then you already know my answer."

Luna studied him silently.

Her instincts screamed that something massive was happening behind the scenes.

Bruce Carter.

Her quiet little brother.

Had just met someone powerful.

Someone dangerous.

And Bruce hadn't looked scared at all.

Finally, Luna spoke again.

"That man…"

Bruce waited.

"…he felt like someone who commands people."

Bruce nodded slightly.

"Good observation."

Luna narrowed her eyes.

"You're not denying it."

Bruce shrugged.

"You didn't ask a question."

Luna took another step closer.

"Bruce."

Her voice softened slightly.

"You know you can tell me things."

Bruce looked at her calmly.

"I know."

The silence between them stretched for a moment.

Luna searched his face carefully.

Then she sighed.

"Fine."

She turned and started walking away.

But just before reaching the staircase, she stopped.

Her voice came quietly over her shoulder.

"Be careful."

Bruce watched her.

Luna didn't turn around.

But her next words were softer.

"Whoever that man is…"

"…he's dangerous."

Bruce smiled faintly.

"Yes."

"He is."

Luna disappeared up the staircase.

Bruce stood alone in the entrance hall.

The mansion was quiet again.

Bruce whispered to himself.

"And that's exactly why he's useful."

Across the city.

Inside his car, Victor Hale watched the passing skyline through the window.

His subordinate sat across from him.

"Sir, do you trust him?"

Victor chuckled softly.

"Trust?"

He shook his head.

"I don't trust anyone."

The subordinate nodded.

"Then why the ceasefire?"

Victor's smile widened slightly.

"Because Bruce Carter…"

Victor's eyes reflected the city lights.

"…is the most interesting variable I've encountered in years."

The car disappeared into the night traffic.

Victor whispered.

"Let's see what kind of empire you build."

Back inside the Carter mansion.

Bruce stood quietly at the top of the staircase outside his room.

He looked down at the silent hallway.

Then he opened his bedroom door.

Inside, he walked toward the window.

The distant city lights of Manhattan flickered across the horizon.

Bruce crossed his arms.

"Victor Hale."

His voice was calm.

"Let's see which one of us finishes the game."

Bruce closed the curtains slowly.

But outside, the night continued moving.

And somewhere in that darkness…

The future was already shifting.
