Chapter 29 - The Offer

The city lights of Manhattan shimmered through the glass walls of the penthouse.

Below them, thousands of cars moved like glowing rivers through the streets, but inside the quiet room, only two people mattered.

Bruce Carter.

Victor Hale.

Victor's proposal still hung in the air.

An alliance.

Bruce leaned back in the chair calmly, his eyes resting on Victor without revealing his thoughts.

Inside Bruce's mind, Aron Turner's instincts were already analysing every possibility.

"Working with Victor Hale…"

The advantages were obvious.

Victor controlled one of the fastest-growing underground organisations in the world.

His intelligence network stretched across several countries.

His influence reached both legal and illegal systems.

But the risks were just as large.

Victor Hale was not someone who followed others.

He controlled.

Bruce tapped his finger lightly on the table.

"You move fast."

Victor smiled slightly.

"Efficiency saves time."

Bruce glanced briefly at the skyline behind Victor.

"You barely know me."

Victor shrugged.

"I know enough."

Bruce raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?"

Victor leaned forward slightly.

"You solved puzzles designed for engineers."

"You bypassed my surveillance network."

"You tracked my location."

Victor's eyes sharpened.

"And you did all of that without revealing anything to your family."

Victor paused.

"That tells me two things."

Bruce waited.

Victor raised two fingers.

"First – you're intelligent."

"Second — you're hiding something valuable."

Bruce chuckled softly.

"You're making assumptions."

Victor shook his head.

"No."

"I'm recognising patterns."

The room grew quiet again.

Victor spoke again.

"Let's be honest."

Bruce tilted his head.

"Go on."

Victor gestured toward the skyline.

"The world is controlled by systems."

"Governments."

"Corporations."

"Intelligence networks."

Victor's voice remained calm.

"But the real power sits in the shadows."

Bruce nodded slightly.

"That part is true."

Victor folded his hands.

"I built Black Serpent because I believe in controlling information."

"Money."

"Influence."

Victor looked directly at Bruce.

"And I believe you want the same things."

Bruce didn't deny it.

Instead, he asked quietly.

"And if I don't?"

Victor smiled.

"Then we continue this game."

Bruce studied him for several seconds.

Victor wasn't threatening him.

He was simply stating the reality.

Bruce leaned back again.

"You're not afraid of me."

Victor laughed quietly.

"You're ten."

Bruce smirked slightly.

"Yet you invited me."

Victor nodded.

"Because you're dangerous."

Victor pointed lightly at Bruce.

"But not in the way most people are."

Bruce's eyes sharpened slightly.

Victor continued.

"You don't rush."

"You observe."

"You analyse."

Victor smiled faintly.

"That's the behaviour of someone building something."

Bruce's silence confirmed nothing.

But it didn't deny anything either.

Victor took a sip of water.

"So here's the simple version."

Bruce waited.

Victor spoke clearly.

"We cooperate."

"You keep your secrets."

"I keep mine."

Victor leaned forward slightly.

"And together we build something bigger."

Bruce finally asked the question that mattered.

"Bigger than what?"

Victor smiled.

"The world's largest shadow network."

Bruce's eyes grew slightly colder.

Now the real intention had appeared.

Victor wasn't just proposing cooperation.

He was proposing global influence.

Bruce leaned back slowly.

"You're ambitious."

Victor chuckled.

"Ambition built this city."

Bruce glanced toward the skyline again.

Lights filled the horizon endlessly.

Ambition.

Power.

Control.

Aron Turner had chased those things in his previous life.

And he had succeeded.

But that life had also ended in tragedy.

Bruce turned his gaze back to Victor.

"And if I refuse?"

Victor shrugged calmly.

"Then nothing changes."

"You continue growing."

"I continue observing."

Victor smiled slightly.

"And eventually we collide."

Bruce chuckled softly.

"You're honest."

Victor nodded.

"Always."

Bruce stood up slowly.

Victor watched him carefully.

Bruce walked toward the massive glass window.

The entire city stretched below him.

Millions of people are living their lives.

Unaware of the small conversations that could shape their future.

Bruce spoke quietly.

"You're missing something."

Victor raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

Bruce turned slightly.

"You assume I want power."

Victor tilted his head.

"Don't you?"

Bruce smiled faintly.

"I want control."

Victor's eyes glowed with interest.

"That's even more dangerous."

Bruce looked back toward the city.

"And you?"

Victor answered immediately.

"I want influence."

Bruce nodded slowly.

"So we're similar."

Victor smiled.

"Exactly."

The room became silent again.

Finally, Bruce spoke.

"You're not wrong."

Victor watched him carefully.

Bruce turned back toward the table.

"But alliances require trust."

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

Bruce raised one finger.

"And trust requires time."

Victor smiled.

"So you're not refusing."

Bruce returned to his chair.

"I'm delaying."

Victor laughed softly.

"That's a negotiator's answer."

Bruce shrugged.

"I'm learning."

Victor stood up and extended his hand.

"For now… a temporary ceasefire."

Bruce looked at the hand for a moment.

Then he shook it.

"Temporary."

Victor's smile widened slightly.

"Good."

The two strategists had reached their first agreement.

Not an alliance.

Not yet.

But the war had paused.

For now.

Outside the building.

Luna Carter watched the skyscraper entrance carefully.

Her silver eyes focused on the door.

Minutes later, she saw something that made her heart skip slightly.

Bruce.

And beside him…

A tall man in a black coat.

Luna frowned.

"Who is that?"

Something about the man felt dangerous.

Powerful.

Luna whispered.

"Bruce… what kind of world are you stepping into?"
