Jamie and Soren banged on Holland's door.
"Holland!" they shouted, fists striking the wood again and again, the sound echoing through the hallway.
"Holland," Jamie said. "If you can hear us, then open the door."
But no matter how much they knocked or banged on the door, there was no reply. No sound of footsteps in the house, no sign that anyone had even come close to the door.
Jamie's chest felt tight. His heart was pounding so loudly he could hear it in his ears. This was wrong. Everything about this was wrong. Holland never ignored them. He always answered.
"Holland!" Soren shouted again, gripping the doorknob and rattling it hard, as if forcing it might somehow make everything okay. "Open the door!"
But no matter what he did, the door did not open, and Holland didn't come out.
