The attendant spent a few more minutes helping us with our positions. He showed us where to place our hands on the grip and explained how to keep the clubface aligned with the ball. He even corrected Soren's stance twice when Soren insisted he was standing perfectly well. Each correction was met with a polite nod and the distinct impression that Soren was only half listening.
Eventually, the attendant stepped back.
"Right. Who would like to go first?"
"Me!" Jamie declared.
Of course.
He stepped forward with the confidence of a man who had never experienced failure in his entire life. The sunlight caught on the club as he lifted it, and for a moment he looked almost convincing—shoulders set, chin lifted, the picture of someone who had definitely done this before.
I moved aside with Soren, and the attendant placed a ball in position for Jamie.
"Remember what I told you," he reminded him. "Keep your eye on the ball. Make a controlled swing, and don't try to force it."
