Chapter 71 - CHAPTER 71 — The Voice in the Void

Silence.

Not ordinary silence—

but the kind that presses against your eardrums,

slips into your lungs,

and crawls under your skin like cold ink.

Jason Wu opened his eyes slowly.

Darkness.

Not black—just *absence*.

A void without up or down, without time, without direction.

He felt as if he were floating inside the empty space between two breaths.

"…Longwu?" Jason whispered.

His voice didn't echo.

It didn't travel.

It didn't exist.

Longwu Sword answered immediately—

and that terrified Jason more than anything.

*["Jason… don't move."]*

Jason froze.

"…Why?"

Longwu's tone was tight, controlled, unnervingly focused.

*["There is something here. Watching."]*

Jason swallowed.

"Is it the Observer Prime?"

*["…No. You'd already be gone if it were."]*

*["This presence is older. Much, much older."]*

Jason's pulse quickened.

He forced himself to breathe evenly.

The last thing he remembered was the Riftbound dragging him out of reality, saving him from the Observer Prime's gaze at the last possible moment.

But if they escaped…

Why did he feel more unsafe now?

A faint vibration rippled through the void.

Jason tensed.

"…What was that?"

Longwu didn't answer immediately.

Then—

*["…Something waking up."]*

Jason opened his mouth to speak—

**A whisper slid across his mind.**

Not through his ears.

Not through spiritual sense.

Directly into his soul.

**"Little… Wu…"**

Jason's heart lurched.

He stumbled back, floating weightlessly in the dark.

"No. No no no—Who said that?!"

The void trembled—

like a massive creature shifting in its sleep.

Longwu snapped:

*["JASON! DO NOT RESPOND TO IT DIRECTLY!"]*

Jason grit his teeth.

"I wasn't planning to!"

But the whisper skimmed across his soul again—

**"You carry… the scent."**

Jason froze.

"…Scent of what?"

The void rippled violently.

Longwu shouted:

*["Don't speak to it—!"]*

Too late.

Jason had already asked.

The whisper deepened.

**"The scent… of the one who defied me long ago."**

Jason's blood turned to ice.

Long ago?

Someone… before him?

Jason's voice trembled. "…You mean the First Defier?"

Silence.

Then the void responded with a quake—

as if the entire place recoiled in memory.

**"…He challenged my silence."**

**"…He broke my stillness."**

**"…He scarred the void."**

Jason's mouth went dry.

Longwu whispered, horrified:

*["Jason… step back. NOW."]*

Jason shifted slightly—

and the entire void *pulled toward him*, like an ocean reacting to a single drop of blood.

"Oh hell—" Jason gasped.

He raised Longwu instinctively—

But the sword trembled.

LONGWU TREMBLED.

Jason had never—

not once—

seen Longwu afraid.

*Not of the Butcher.*

*Not of the System.*

*Not even of the Administrator's gaze.*

But now—

Longwu's voice cracked.

*["Jason… that is not a being."]*

*["That is not a creature."]*

*["That is a concept."]*

Jason blinked. "A… concept?"

Longwu swallowed.

*["…You are speaking to the Void Itself."]*

Jason's breath hitched.

The entire infinite emptiness—

the place between worlds,

between timelines,

between existence—

This wasn't a chamber.

It wasn't a prison.

It wasn't a timeframe.

It was a **presence**.

And it was listening.

Jason forced himself to remain perfectly still.

"O-Okay… Void… sir… entity… whatever you are—what do you want from me?"

The darkness thickened.

**"A memory."**

Jason's eyes widened.

"…A memory? Why?"

The void answered with a voice like drifting dust.

**"I have no memories."**

**"I am the place where memories go to die."**

**"But you… carry the echo of the one who scarred me."**

Jason swallowed hard.

"The First Defier?"

The void trembled with something close to recognition.

**"He carried the Catalyst."**

**"The same signature you now carry."**

Jason stiffened.

"The shard… the Termination Core Shard?"

Silence.

Then—

A whisper like wind across a dead forest.

**"Child of Wu…"**

**"Bring it closer."**

Jason immediately stepped back.

"Not happening."

The void whispered again:

**"Bring. It. Closer."**

Each word strained against reality.

The pressure grew so heavy Jason felt his knees bending involuntarily.

Longwu roared:

*["JASON MOVE—NOW!"]*

The void twisted, collapsing inward like a mouth preparing to swallow him whole—

Jason bolted.

He didn't know where he was running.

There was no direction.

No horizon.

But his instincts screamed: **GO.**

Longwu flared with red sparks.

*["LEFT!"]*

Jason veered left.

Something massive—something unseen—snapped behind him like a black hole closing.

Jason felt the pull, the suction—

Longwu shouted:

*["AGAIN! DOWNWARD!"]*

Jason pushed spiritual energy into his feet, leaping downward—

the void shattering like a cracked mirror beneath him.

The Voice spoke again—

and now it wasn't a whisper.

It was a command.

**"YOU WILL NOT ESCAPE ME."**

Jason snarled back:

"WATCH ME—!"

A faint light appeared in the distance—

A crack.

A tear.

A thin silver line cutting through the darkness.

Longwu gasped.

*["JASON! THAT'S IT! RUN TO IT!"]*

Jason sprinted toward the sliver of light—

The void roared behind him—

a sound like an entire dying universe.

Reality warped.

Time twisted.

Jason's heartbeat sounded like thunder.

He lunged—

And dove through the crack of light—

Slamming into solid ground.

Grass.

Real air.

Real sky.

Jason gasped.

He was back.

Somewhere.

Anywhere that wasn't the Void.

Jason collapsed onto his knees, panting hard.

Longwu's voice shook.

*["…Jason… are you alive?"]*

Jason wiped sweat from his brow.

"Yeah… yeah, I think I—"

A hand touched his shoulder.

Jason froze.

Slowly, he turned his head—

And saw a woman with silver eyes staring at him.

Expression emotionless.

Aura cold.

Voice flat.

**"Jason Wu."**

Jason swallowed.

"…Who—who are you?"

The woman blinked once.

Then said the words Jason feared most:

**"I am the Observer Prime."**
