Chapter 96 - The painting

I twisted and turned on the bed for another hour.

I could not sleep. I had been lying there for the past three hours, waiting for sleep to come, waiting for the damned howling to stop so I could figure out whether that was what kept me awake or if it was something else.

Nothing changed.

My eyes snapped open and fixed on the white ceiling. I huffed, pulling the duvet up to my chin before shifting my gaze to the door in the dark room.

I could not leave to look for Hex. Maybe he could help me.

But after the way Grandma Clarice had dismissed me earlier, I did not think it was wise to step out. And Hex had not exactly looked eager to see me either.

A shudder ran through me as I remembered the guttural growl that tore from him once the door had closed, along with the lingering, torturous sound that still echoed in my head.

I hoped he was fine.

"Maybe I am thinking too much," I whispered to myself. That had to be the reason I was still awake.
