Malachi temporarily forgot the shame he felt over his haircut and frowned.
"Son? What do you mean, son?"
Thinking he had misunderstood her, she quickly waved her hands and gestured the shape of a baby as she explained, "I don't mean the sun. I'm talking about a son. Like being pregnant and giving birth to a baby boy?"
The man was dumbfounded.
She was married? Really? When? How?
His eyes dropped to her ring finger.
But she wasn't wearing a wedding ring.
Seeing the visible change in his expression, she grew alarmed. "You don't look very well. Is something the matter?"
"I just…" He started, then stopped and exhaled, the playful smile that always danced across his face vanishing. "I didn't know you had a kid."
"Kids," she corrected, holding up two fingers. "I have two boys."
He swallowed. "My apologies. I didn't know you had children."
Thinking he meant she looked young for someone with children, she grinned broadly, "Why, thank you. You're not the first to think so."
