Chapter 30 - Chapter 30 — Naruto’s Diary (II)

I bought a whole bag of water balloons to start Rasengan stage one. I thought I'd have to grind forever to do it one-handed, but I nailed it in under an hour.

Not bad, me! (Okay, it's probably because of all that Kurama control practice.)

I was about to start stage two when Sasuke popped out of nowhere, all awkward, asking what I was doing. Turns out he'd been watching me for a while.

This Sasuke has time now?

I wanted to send him away, so I casually said he should practice his Sharingan and push for three tomoe soon. He froze and started grilling me like crazy about how I knew that.

What can I say? I can't tell him I read the manga.

So I improvised. I said I learned it from Kakashi-sensei's book.

You know how Kakashi always reads that romance novel? I said underneath the cover it actually contains Sharingan usage notes. He hides it inside an Icha Icha shell to avoid suspicion.

Sasuke looked thoughtful and walked off…

Uh. Hope Kakashi survives that.

June 26. I "ran into" Hinata near the training field. I invited her to Ichiraku, but on the way, any time I got slightly close, her face turned beet red like she was about to faint.

This is hard. If she can't even handle light contact, dating is impossible. Need long-term desensitization.

Then she casually devoured over ten bowls of ramen.

I thought that "big eater" trait was anime-only. So does this world follow anime settings too? Or are both manga and anime canon here?

Anyway, I dipped. Went to find my Tenten.

At her family's tool shop, I offered to help clean up, then pulled the classic move—"oops, touched hands," "oops, got close," etc.

Her little hands were super smooth. I touched them. Hehehe~

She looked shy but didn't resist much.

I should be able to win her over soon, right?

On the way home I bumped into Sakura buying groceries. She casually asked if I wanted dinner at her place. Of course I said yes.

We ate with her family, then chatted about the timeline. She said she missed home.

She looked really down, so I told her: "You once took 6,000 tries to no-damage solo a Valkyrie. Missing home is nothing for you!"

She corrected me. "It was 6,231 times…"

I'm sleepy. Going home. Life is meaningless.

June 27. Kakashi finally recommended Team 7 for the Chunin Exams. I remembered Iruka might kidnap Moegi later, so I pre-emptively tied up the Konohamaru trio outside the village and beat up the "assassins" who came running.

Wait… were those guys trying to rescue them?

But Iruka's test should count as passed. Afterward I told Konohamaru his shinobi awareness was still trash—if I'd been a real villain, he'd be dead. As punishment, I made him treat us to Ichiraku.

He got furious, so I promised to teach him Shadow Clones and the Sexy Jutsu. He finally shut up.

That night I ran into Iruka, who also treated me to ramen and asked about my wellbeing for ages.

Ah, Iruka—my real father!

Another day of free ramen~

June 28. More foreign ninjas are arriving in Konoha. I've started taking Konohamaru and crew away from the village to train in the forest.

Can't risk a new transmigrator slipping in.

Any chance to show off in front of Temari… I'll save it for later.

I've also been observing Konohamaru. No sign of possession. So maybe all transmigrators arrived at the same time?

Or do they come in waves?

Please don't be the second one.

After finishing, I reread everything, tore the diary into tiny pieces, and scattered them.

July 1.

Sakura and I met fifteen minutes early outside the academy.

In canon, Ibiki ran the first exam. I was planning to submit a blank paper and coast through, but Sakura poured cold water on that idea.

"You think Ibiki might not be the first proctor?" I stared.

Sakura, dark circles under her eyes, said, "I only realized last night. Ibiki might be busy interrogating Haku and Zabuza. He may not have time."

"But… maybe he still does."

"Maybe. Just saying it's possible."

She paused. "Honestly, I don't care how the test works. The only one with any real chance to pass is probably Shikamaru. The real problem is transmigrators."

"Even Orochimaru can sneak into the Chunin Exams, much less transmigrators."

Naruto pinched his temple. "By the way, is your right eyelid twitching today?"

"No."

Naruto finally breathed easier.

Apparently Sakura's right eyelid twitching = bad news was already a thing now.

"He's here. Watch what you say."

Naruto followed her gaze and saw Sasuke walking over, face dark.

A few days ago Sasuke had demanded Icha Icha Paradise from Kakashi and nearly gave Kakashi a heart attack.

Kid's supposed to be avenging his clan, not getting air-shipped.

Sasuke had begged and begged until Kakashi admitted—no, really, it's just that kind of book, okay?! It has nothing to do with Sharingan!

To keep him from leaving empty-handed, Kakashi still gave him some Sharingan pointers and even told him about the eye's origins.

Sasuke clenched his fist, then looked at Naruto with hesitation.

Beat Naruto up? Kakashi did share useful stuff. Don't beat him up? Still feels disgusting.

"Naruto," Sasuke said lowly, "I'm looking forward to a proper fight with you."

Naruto tilted his head. "Sure. I won't use Kurama against you."

"You—!" Sasuke felt mocked.

"I'm serious. I can't exactly kill you," Naruto widened his eyes. "You're the Avenger. Avengers don't get beaten to death by teammates."

Sasuke almost laughed in anger and was about to "exchange martial arts"—

When a girl's voice shouted from the distance:

"Naruto!"

Tenten, Neji, and Lee walked over. Tenten especially was smiling brightly at Naruto.

Naruto's soul left his body for a second.

He turned stiffly to Sakura.

She stared at him coldly, then pulled on her gloves.
