Chapter 73 - chapter 74 anytime

The night air was cool against Cynthia's skin as she stood by the roadside, arms folded tightly around herself. Her phone screen had barely gone dark when headlights appeared from the far end of the street.

She didn't need to check the plate.

She knew it was him.

Alexander's car slowed to a stop in front of her, the engine humming softly, steady controlled The passenger door unlocked with a quiet click.

For a moment, Cynthia didn't move.

Then she opened the door and get inside.

The warmth of the car wrapped around her instantly.

"Thank you," she said softly, breaking the silence as she fastened her seatbelt.

Alexander glanced at her briefly, his expression calm but his eyes sharp with concern. "You don't need to thank me."

She exhaled, leaning back against the seat.

The city lights blurred past them, reflections dancing across the windshield. For a while, neither of them spoke. The silence was heavy.

Cynthia broke the silence first.

"So…" she said, tilting her head slightly toward him, trying to sound light even though her chest still felt tight. "You said you had my location."

Alexander kept his eyes on the road. "Yes."

She raised an eyebrow. "Care to explain why my boss has my location?"

A faint pause.

"For security purposes," he replied evenly.

She laughed quietly. "Security purposes?"

"Yes."

"Alexander," she said, smiling now, "that sounds suspiciously like an excuse."

He glanced at her again, this time longer. "You walk alone often. You leave work late. I prefer knowing you're safe."

Her smile softened.

"Oh," she murmured. "So you track all your employees?"

"No," he said. "Only the ones I care about."

The words lingered between them, warm and dangerous.

Cynthia looked away, her heart suddenly racing. "That's… oddly reassuring."

The rest of the drive passed in a calmer silence. The chaos from her apartment felt far away now muted and distant.

When they arrived at Alexander's house, he parked and stepped out first, walking around to open her door.

"Thanks" she asked quietly.

He met her eyes.

Something in her chest loosened.

Inside, the house was quiet and dimly lit, calm in a way her mind desperately needed. Alexander took her coat gently and placed it aside.

"You can use the guest room," he said. "I'll bring you water."

She nodded. "Thank you. Again."

He handed her a glass, their fingers brushing briefly.

Electric.

They both noticed.

Cynthia pulled her hand back first. "Sorry. It's been… a long night."

"I know," he said softly.

The air shifted—thicker now, charged with something neither of them named.

Alexander took a step back, clearing his throat. "Get some rest. You're safe here."

She smiled faintly. "You sound very confident."

"I am."

As she turned toward the hallway, she paused. "Alexander?"

"Yes?"

"Thank you… for coming to get me."

He nodded once. "Anytime."

She walked away, unaware that he remained standing there long after she disappeared into the guest room.

This night was supposed to be simple.

It wasn't.

And whatever was growing between them—it was no longer something either of them could ignore.
