Elisabeth's POV
The familiar warmth of Jefferson's scent surrounded me as consciousness slowly returned. My eyelids felt heavy, but I forced them open, expecting waves of agony to crash over me. The explosion had thrown us from the factory like ragdolls, and I remembered the brutal impact of hitting the ground. Yet somehow, my body felt intact.
The memory of searing flames and unbearable heat flooded back. I had been certain those moments would be my last, watching the fire devour everything in its path. Then darkness had claimed me.
"Finally awake."
Alana's voice drew my attention to the corner of the room. She sat with her arms folded tightly across her chest, fury radiating from every line of her body. The look she wore could have melted steel. If I had to sum up her expression, I would say she looked ready to commit murder.
Then the rest of it crashed into me like a tidal wave.
My body moved before my mind could catch up, pushing against the mattress to get up.
