The words slammed into me, heavy and unrelenting. Even now, lying in a hospital bed with a head injury and a battered body, she was still building a shield around him. The rage I'd been suppressing finally broke through the surface.
"He's not my father," I snapped, my voice shaking with a bitterness I couldn't hide. "And don't you dare call that an accident. He put you here, Mom! How can you still defend him after everything he's done?"
Leon's hand came to rest at the small of my back, a quiet reminder to hold myself together. But I couldn't stop the tears of frustration from burning behind my eyes. I had come here ready to protect her, to pull her out of this, and yet she was still choosing the man who was tearing her apart.
