"It's my stepfather," I murmured, my thumb hovering over the decline button. I didn't want anything to ruin the joy of being back with Leon.
Leon noticed my hesitation and rested a steady, reassuring hand on my knee. "Pick it up, Beck," he said softly, though there was quiet seriousness in his tone. "If he's calling you now, it could be important."
Taking a deep breath, I swiped to answer. "Hello?"
My stepfather's voice came through the line, but it wasn't the sharp, commanding tone I remembered. It was fractured, unsteady, trembling in a way I had never heard before.
"Beck… It's your mother. She's been rushed to the hospital. She's very sick, son."
