[IRIS]
Not even the break of dawn had come when we made our way to the portal and crossed into the human world.
I had been expecting something strange.
Perhaps dark streets, unfamiliar buildings, or a place that felt entirely different from our own.
I had not expected this.
The moment we stepped through the portal, I stopped dead.
Buildings rose toward the sky around us, their walls made almost entirely of glass and steel. They were so tall that I had to tilt my head back just to see their tops, and even then, some disappeared behind the pale morning clouds.
And the people.
There were so many people.
Far too many.
They hurried past us in every direction, dressed in clothes I had never seen before. Some carried little glowing devices in their hands. Others spoke into them while walking. A few wore strange things over their ears, talking to someone who wasn't even there.
For several seconds, I could do nothing but stare.
