INTERVIEW 3
The following interview was conducted in the late fall of 1014 GKE.
Transcribed by Kalina Mutsi, from a zlurzlæer recording.
Interviewee: Mr. Varna Allupi, Great Tonazan's younger brother, 59 summers old.
Q:How would you describe your brother before and after the war? Did you see any significant change in his nature, beliefs…?
A: Hmm… nothing specific comes to mind, but some things were different. I think his biggest change came after he started attending those Tarradokka liturgies.
Q:How so?
A: He became more… how could I say it? Distracted from reality, but disciplined in his daily routines. I used to visit him often. He moved into a new apartment block that was being built by the Denovrri investors, but was given to the war veterans by the then interregnum Coalition government. I was very surprised by that gesture of the Coalition, you know, I never heard of a victor who awarded soldiers of a defeated country with anything, much less a place to live. When Kuzans held all of the strings, houses and apartments were such a valuable asset. You couldn't get a new one if you didn't openly accept their rule and worked for their ministries. Frischkan was very adamant on criticizing the Coalition, their policies, the surge of technological advancements they brought, but you see, he accepted this gesture. I don't know if you can say he was hypocritical or not; criticizing them, then accepting a whole apartment in the Garya block. I don't know what he was thinking most of the time, even less why he did things he did. But I didn't judge him. Though, this complex was very close to the church he frequently used to visit. When I asked him about it, he just said he was helping some Kora and Dzana people with services, cleaning and other stuff. Don't really know what's going there, you are probably more familiar with that. Young people these days are more interested in it than my generation.
Q:When was this exactly? Was it when he worked for the TNK Papers?
A: Yeah, around that time. The war ended around 974, so soon after the war he landed a job there, let's say 975/6, not really sure. At first, he wanted to finish his studies but the academia was closed for a couple of summers, and he refused to participate in the unofficial lectures held by professors and students. Said he didn't have much to learn there anyway. It was a touchy topic for him. As I said, I never knew what he was thinking. One day he wanted to do this, the next it was that… changing his mind always. But he grounded himself in the TNK I think, and that church. He figured out what real life is after the war, and that not everything is intellectual in nature. He lacked fizikalia, a touch of reality, many things; always was in his head. But after the war, now I remember, he came home. He actually was different. His voice was deeper, he was in a hospital briefly before he came back, and more than ever he seemed angry. I never saw him angry except when we were kids, usually when I and Krasin took some of his stuff to play (chuckle), but the older we got, he was always in his head, focused on something far beyond our understanding. Now, he came with that focus, and anger. You know, people often think he is outright secluded in himself, but he used to be very much a lad. He enjoyed sports, and music. Although, whenever a new face would drop by, he acted all highly in his solace, reading his books and what not. It was just a mask, a way to defend himself from the outside world. One time, I jokingly invited him to join our Akarria Gulballa team in front of this gal that used to come often with her parents. Wanted him to seem 'cool' in front of her as I realized he had a thing for her. He'd be a good wide wing, or a line keeper… anyway, with a serious face, he refused. Even though he asked me a couple of times if they accepted older kids, I think he found it embarrassing instead, and got a bit pissed at me.
Q:Would that 'gal' perhaps be Lady Mafavana Vruur?
A: Lady Mafavana, Vruur… huh? All fancy now it seems. Miss Mafka, we used to call her. She was a very exciting person to be around. How do you know her? Oh, you did an interview. Cool. Hopefully she is doing alright. Did you know that she and Frischkan used to actually be a thing? Lucky guy (laughter). Oh you did? Man, nothing gets by you, huh? Well, if you see her again, send her my regards. So, where were we?
