Evelin's POV
My frown deepened, irritation flashing across my face. "Jimmy, this isn't appropriate between us. Don't force me into a confrontation!"
Sure, my left shoulder throbbed with pain, but if push came to shove, I could probably hold my ground against him.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, his words barely audible.
I went still, caught off guard by the raw emotion in his voice as he continued.
"I'm sorry. I should have been faster. I failed to shield you. I'm sorry... so sorry..."
I pressed my lips together. "You don't have any obligation to me. None of this is on you."
"If I'd arrived even moments earlier, you wouldn't be sitting here wounded," Jimmy's voice cracked with guilt. I could see in his eyes that nothing would have kept him from defending me.
