Evelin's POV
I felt my breath catch.
"Do you ever wonder," Jimmy said, "if I hadn't just stood there doing nothing back then, your brother might never have gone through that fire years ago? Never gotten those burns? Do you hate me even more because of that? Because my inaction caused him all that pain?"
I let out a slow breath. "I don't blame you."
His eyes widened in genuine shock. "Really?"
"Like I said before," I told him. "Back then, my brother was just some random stranger you encountered overseas. You didn't owe him a thing."
"Sure, I resented you for a while. Even hated you. I knew you had no obligation to help, but I couldn't stop feeling that way. That's changed now. You've done so much for me—I've witnessed it firsthand. I'm grateful."
"So if Jaxson really turns out to be your brother soon, could we possibly get back together?"
Jimmy's voice cracked slightly as he stared at me with desperate hope.
