I later learned that Grey had even handed over the ruby necklace to Grace—the same piece he'd promised to buy for me at auction, the one my mother had lost overseas years ago. Apparently, Grace had hurled the necklace down and rejected it outright, or it would've ended up mixed in with the rest of the jewelry.
The next morning, I discovered Grey had taken one of my ruby rings from the jewelry box. When I confronted him about it, he claimed he needed to hock it temporarily until the company turned a profit, promising to buy it back and get me something even nicer.
He'd never delivered on his promise to get me a better ring, yet he'd showered Grace with countless pieces.
Sure, Grace had saved his life, but I was his wife.
I was the woman who'd stood by him through the darkest times, working myself to the bone to build our business.
Yet he'd given me scraps.
