The thought alone sent anxiety racing through me.
Sweat had formed across Jimmy's forehead.
I reached for a tissue, ready to dab away the moisture from his skin.
The moment the tissue made contact with his forehead, his eyes snapped open—wild with fear and crushing remorse.
I winced as his fingers clamped around my wrist, the pressure sharp enough to ache deep in my bones.
Jimmy seemed completely disconnected from reality, staring at me with unfocused eyes as he mumbled, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I should've saved your brother. I'm so sorry..."
My thoughts scattered. What kind of dream is he having? The confusion hit me like a wave.
"I'm sorry... I'm sorry..." His mouth trembled as the apologies poured out, eyes wide but vacant—like he was still trapped somewhere between sleep and waking.
His lips wouldn't stop shaking, and the hand gripping mine was trembling just as hard.
