"Jimmy?" I whispered, staring at the broken, hollow smile that twisted his features. My emotions churned like a storm—everything tangled up inside me, impossible to sort through.
I knew exactly how deeply he'd been wounded.
But understanding his pain didn't mean I could stomach the way he was cornering me. And if he actually followed through with his threat, forgiveness would be impossible.
No matter how my heart shattered for the horrors he'd endured as a child, I still couldn't forgive him for this.
After an eternity, Jimmy's eyes fluttered open.
This time, though, nothing remained in his stare except vacant emptiness—a cold detachment that had swallowed the anguish whole.
It sent chills down my spine, reminding me of our very first encounter.
