Flashes of memory crashed through Jaxson's thoughts, and he could almost hear a girl's frantic voice ringing in his ears. "Rex! Rex! Rex..."
Each desperate call of "Rex" seemed to slice through his very being.
"I'm... I'm okay, Rex. Really, don't stress about it," Evelin managed to whisper, her voice trembling as her complexion grew ashen.
Even so, she forced a smile, pretending everything was fine just to prevent Jaxson from spiraling into deeper panic.
"The bleeding isn't stopping. We're getting you to a hospital, right now!" Allen declared, urgency lacing his tone. He'd already fashioned a crude bandage from his necktie around Evelin's shoulder, but crimson continued to leak through the makeshift dressing.
Allen lifted Evelin into his arms just as police sirens wailed and backup units flooded the area with strobing lights.
Behind the officers came Jimmy.
