Evelin's POV
Grey was lost in thought. 'But if it wasn't a military bereavement allowance, how could she suddenly produce such a large sum of money?'
He remembered my grief and devastation when my parents died.
I saw a flicker of a painful memory in his eyes, and I knew he was recalling his own desperation from being broke.
When success consumed his every thought, I handed him that money and said, "Use this to make your dreams come true!"
"Where did you get so much cash?" he'd asked, stunned.
"My parents left it for me," I'd whispered, my eyes heavy with sorrow as I stared at the bills.
But he was too drunk on excitement to notice my heartbreak.
Grey approached me now, his voice rough. "Why didn't you tell me it was your parents' military bereavement allowance?"
He seemed to struggle for breath, as if a great weight was pressing on his chest.
"Because I didn't want that money to become a burden for you. I didn't want to add pressure," I said evenly.
