Ray staggered back.
The person kept inching forward, slow and cautious.
Kirby was completely out of view.
"Run." He whispered as he backed deeper into the path.
Turning his back to the interrogator, Ray began to run.
Kirby was already ahead of him.
Adrenaline spurred them forward. They ran a mile before bursting out on the highway.
Few cars sped by them.
"Now what?" Kirby stopped to catch his breath, leaning against a sturdy tree's trunk.
Ray hunched over, his hands on his knees.
"I don't… don't know."
"Should we call a car?"
"I don't have a phone, remember?"
"I have one… let me get it." Kirby fished in the pocket of his jacket for it.
The phone didn't respond to his attempts to turn it on.
"What's going on? It was working perfectly before."
Ray snatched it from him and tried. When it refused to respond, he gave it a few spanks.
Still nothing.
"It's dead."
"How?" Kirby ran a hand through his hair. "I just got it two months ago! What would I tell my mum?"
