The battlefield erupted into a chaotic symphony of clashing steel, guttural shouts, and the sickening thud of bronze meeting bone. Atlas, moving with a grim determination, led the charge. His light armor, shield, and sword allowed him to weave through the dense Spartan formation and penetrate the Athenian line where the fighting was thickest.
Kassandra, despite her initial confusion over the "Eagle Vision," quickly adapted. Her instincts, honed by years of surviving as a misthios, guided her through the fray. She moved with a fluid, deadly grace, her Spear of Leonidas, the ancient artifact, a terrifying extension of her will. She didn't target the gilded commanders, but she cleared a path of common soldiers with practiced ease, her ferocity unmatched.
Alexios and Lukas, now fully utilizing their Eagle Vision , became a whirlwind of focused, strategic destruction. Golden auras pulsed around key Athenian figures, marking them for swift elimination. Alexios, a grin stretching across his face as he held the Sword of Damokles, would often call out targets to Lukas. Lukas, with his massive Hammer of Jason, would then unleash a flurry of precise attacks, leaving a trail of disoriented and leaderless Athenian units in their wake.
The Spartan lines, bolstered by the presence of these four formidable warriors, held firm against the initial Athenian onslaught. Nikolaos, witnessing the devastating efficiency of Atlas and his companions, felt a surge of renewed, potent hope. He roared encouragement to his men, his voice cutting through the din of battle, urging them to press their advantage.
As the battle raged, the Athenian command structure began to rapidly unravel. Commanders, one by one, fell to the coordinated, surgical attacks of the four mercenaries. Their deaths sent immediate ripples of panic through their ranks. The morale of the Athenian soldiers, once high, started to crumble, replaced by confusion and fear. The tide of the battle was slowly but surely turning in favor of the Spartans, thanks to the strategic brilliance of Atlas and the unparalleled combat prowess of his team.
The four moved like a well-oiled machine, each playing their part in dismantling the enemy. Atlas, ever the strategist, would often point out structural weaknesses in the Athenian formations with a gesture, allowing Alexios and Lukas to exploit them with surgical precision. Kassandra, meanwhile, acted as a force multiplier, her spear a blur as she cut down any who dared to stand in their way.
The battlefield, once a chaotic mess, began to show signs of a clear victor. The Athenian lines, once formidable, were now fractured and disorganized. Their battle cries, once defiant, were now replaced by whimpers of fear and desperation. The Spartans, on the other hand, fought with renewed vigor, their morale soaring with each fallen Athenian commander.
Nikolaos, watching from the front lines, couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. He had fought in countless battles, but he had never witnessed such a display of martial prowess. The four, like demigods of war, were single-handedly turning the tide, their actions a testament to their skill and their unwavering resolve.
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the blood-soaked field, the last of the Athenian commanders fell. A hush fell over the battlefield, broken only by the groans of the wounded and the triumphant shouts of the Spartans. The Athenian forces, leaderless and demoralized, threw down their weapons, their will to fight utterly broken. The battle was over, and the Spartans had emerged victorious, thanks to the efforts of four extraordinary warriors.
The four companions stood still, breathing heavily, their chests heaving from the extreme physical effort. They began to rest and watched as the Spartans efficiently captured those who surrendered and began the grim task of cleaning the countless bodies.
After a while, Stentor approached the four, a genuine smile and an expression of profound impressiveness on his face.
"What a magnificent show of strength," Stentor said, nodding deeply. "You four really deserve your titles. The Athenian collapse was spectacular."
Before Atlas could reply, a Spartan Commander—a heavily armored veteran—came rushing up to them, saluted Stentor and the mercenaries respectfully, and spoke clearly.
"The Wolf requests the presence of the mercenaries."
The Commander pointed toward the huge mountain that overlooked the field. All of them looked up and saw the distinctive figure of Nikolaos, silhouetted against the setting sun, standing alone on a high ridge, looking down at the victory.
Alexios saw this and instantly clenched his fist, muttering under his breath, but loud enough for Kassandra, Lukas, and Atlas to hear. "What an arrogant fellow. Can't even come down to greet the people who won his battle."
Kassandra was also speechless, her conflicting emotions about her pater boiling to the surface.
Stentor, still beaming from the victory, replied calmly to the Spartan Commander. "We shall be up to him in a moment."
The Spartan Commander heard this and was stunned for a moment before repeating his orders with unwavering discipline. "With respect, sir, he wishes to see the mercenaries alone."
Stentor's smile vanished. "What!" he roared, his voice thick with stunned disbelief.
The Spartan Commander repeated what he had said, meeting Stentor's sudden fury with calm professionalism. "I said, the General wishes…"
Before the commander could finish, Stentor cut him off, his face inches from the other man's. "I heard what you said, Commander. I just don't understand why." Stentor was clearly infuriated by the dismissal.
But the Commander didn't back down, meeting Stentor's eyes calmly. "Those were his orders, sir."
Stentor stared up at Nikolaos on the ridge for a long, silent moment, the defeat stinging. He then finally replied, his voice strained. "Very well." The Commander saluted and turned to leave.
Stentor turned to the four mercenaries, his initial elation completely gone, replaced by seething resentment. "It appears I have other, more tedious matters to attend to." He gave them a curt nod and turned to storm off in the opposite direction.
The moment Stentor's back was turned, Alexios threw an arm over Lukas's shoulder and leaned in conspiratorially.
Alexios puffed out his chest and threw his head back in a perfect, loud imitation of Stentor's initial indignation: "What!"
Lukas, playing along instantly, widened his eyes and put a hand to his ear, leaning in exaggeratedly toward Alexios. "The General wishes…" he whispered, perfectly mimicking the baffled Commander.
They both dissolved into silent laughter, heads pressed together, shaking with suppressed mirth at Stentor's expense.
Kassandra smiled, covering her mouth with her hand, amused by her brothers' antics and the sheer arrogance of Nikolaos's order.
Atlas shook his head, a faint, knowing smirk on his lips. "Alexios, Kassandra, control yourselves. The performance is over. Get ready. We are about to meet your old man."
The amusement instantly evaporated. Alexios and Kassandra instantly stiffened, their expressions turning serious and tense.
They followed Atlas and Lukas, who started the long walk toward the top of the mountain to meet Nikolaos.
