Early June
The third week of Kai's internship brought a heat wave that made our apartment feel like a sauna.
"This is inhumane," Maya complained, sprawled on the floor in front of the box fan wearing minimal clothing. "We're going to die."
"We're not going to die. We're just uncomfortable." I handed her a popsicle from the freezer. "But yes, this sucks."
"Can we go to the beach?"
"I have to be at the hospital in two hours. But we can go tomorrow. Make it an all-day thing."
"What about Kai? Will he want to come?"
"He's working late this week. Some deadline for his project. But we can go, then meet him for dinner after."
Maya nodded, already planning beach logistics in her head. She'd gotten good at adapting to Kai's schedule, understanding that the internship sometimes meant late nights and weekend work.
My phone buzzed. Margaret: "Dinner at my place Friday? I'm making enchiladas."
Me: "Kai might have to work late. Can we confirm closer to Friday?"
