Late May
Kai's first day at the internship arrived with my alarm going off at 5:30 AM.
"Why," I groaned into my pillow.
"Because I need to catch the 6:45 train to make it to San Francisco by eight." Kai was already up, showered, dressed in actual business casual clothes that made him look unfairly professional. "Go back to sleep. I'll be quiet."
"You're never quiet."
"I'll try to be quiet."
I watched through half-closed eyes as he got ready packing his laptop, double-checking he had his badge, running his hands through his hair nervously.
"You're going to be amazing," I said.
"You don't know that."
"I do know that. You're brilliant and they're lucky to have you." I sat up, rubbing my eyes.
"Come here."
He came over and I pulled him down for a proper kiss. "Go show them what you can do. And text me when you get there so I know you didn't fall off the train."
"That's oddly specific."
"I have anxiety. Let me have this."
