Summer remained in the office for a while before finally stepping out. She walked back to her room in a trance, her thoughts empty.
"Summer!" Chloe hurried toward her. "Thank goodness you are safe." She exhaled shakily. "I've been looking for you everywhere. I was terrified. Where did you go?"
Summer did not answer. She stood frozen, her eyes dull and unfocused.
Sensing that something was wrong, Chloe grasped her shoulders. "What happened? Talk to me…"
Her gaze dropped to the papers clutched in Summer's hand. "What are these?"
Chloe took the documents and skimmed through them. With every line she read, the shock on her face deepened. "This is…" She lifted her head abruptly. "Who gave these to you?"
Still, Summer didn't respond. She stood there numbly, as though she had lost her voice.
Chloe reread the papers again and again, shaking her head each time in disbelief. "He actually arranged a donor for Hope," she murmured in a daze. "Why didn't he tell us anything about this?"
