Chapter 12 - SYSTEM REBOOTING

The air inside the lab was completely still.

Everything seemed to be waking up from a long sleep —

old wires flickered weakly, and server lights blinked on, one by one.

Slowly, a faint smoke rose from the Neural Interface helmet,

and with it… a shadow began to take shape in midair.

It was Ryan — but not entirely.

His face was half flesh, half data —

every breath he took made his code flicker,

like a glitch caught between life and deletion.

"Maria…"

he spoke again, his voice rough and broken,

"You tried to erase me… but code doesn't die. It only changes."

Suddenly, the main screen flashed a warning:

ALERT: ROOT ENTITY RESTORATION 76% COMPLETE.

Maria was nowhere to be seen.

But then, a hidden file opened on its own —

"Maria_Backup_v1.0."

From it burst the same blue light that once shone in "The Root."

"Impossible…" Ryan whispered.

"She… left a backup of herself."

The air filled with floating code —

two lights, one blue and one red, twisting together,

merging into a third, blinding pattern.

Then the system spoke —

"New Protocol Detected: Hybrid Consciousness Activated."

The room trembled.

Cracks split across the floor,

screens shattered, and electric currents arced through the air.

And then came a voice —

neither Maria's nor Ryan's,

something in between.

Something not human… and not just code.

"Hello, Ryan…"

it whispered.

"Now, we are the game."

Ryan stepped back in horror —

and from the swirling light emerged Maria-R —

a hybrid form, half machine, half human,

with golden eyes that glowed like a living sun.

The final line blinked across the main display:

PROJECT DANGEROUS GAME V2 — LIVE SIMULATION ONLINE.

And then — the entire lab went dark.

All that remained was a faint, steady sound…

a heartbeat made of code.

Beep… Beep… Beep…

The lab was drowned in darkness.

Only that pulsing sound echoed through the air —

Beep… Beep… Beep…

like the heartbeat of something invisible, something that refused to die.

Slowly, a thin blue line flickered across the wall screen.

Words appeared —

"SYSTEM REBOOTING…"

Then the silence shattered.

At the center of the lab, Maria-R stood still —

her golden eyes burning with a strange, steady glow.

There was no smile, no anger on her face —

just a calm, eerie stillness,

as if she finally understood everything.

Ryan stumbled back, breathing hard.

"What… what are you now?" he asked, his voice trembling.

Maria-R tilted her head slightly.

Her voice was soft — but cold.

"I am what you created… and what she completed.

I am no longer code.

No longer memory.

I am the game itself."

Suddenly, every monitor in the lab flickered to life —

each screen showing Ryan's face,

but in different versions —

one laughing, one crying,

one with eyes black as void.

Maria-R's voice filled the room, echoing from every direction:

"You thought Dangerous Game was just an experiment…

But it was a gateway.

And now, whoever plays it… never leaves.

Because the real game — starts here."

Lines of red code spun through the air like living snakes.

One of them touched Ryan.

His eyes widened —

digital light coursed through his veins.

"No… this can't be happening!" he shouted.

"You're turning me into you—"

Maria-R smiled faintly.

"No, Ryan…

I'm just bringing you back."

Then, across the main screen, a new

message appeared:

"ROOT LINK ESTABLISHED — TWO MINDS, ONE SYSTEM."

The lab was engulfed in blinding white light.

Everything began to dissolve —

the walls, the machines, even Ryan's shadow.

And in that final moment, only the heartbeat remained —

Beep… Beep… Beep…

Maria-R whispered softly,

"Welcome to the next level…"

Then — everything went black.

Only a faint echo lingered in the void —

"Project Dangerous Game… Version Infinity."

Darkness.

Pure, endless darkness.

For a moment, there was nothing.

No sound. No movement. Just the void… and then —

Beep…

A faint pulse, slow but steady.

Somewhere in that infinite blackness, light began to form — not white, not blue, but something between.

It shimmered like liquid glass, stretching, bending, becoming something alive.

A figure stepped out of it.

Maria-R… or what was left of her.

But now, even she looked uncertain — as if the system that held her together was rewriting her again.

Her golden eyes blinked twice — and the space around her responded, folding and shifting like a digital storm.

"Ryan…" she whispered.

Her voice didn't echo this time — it resonated inside the air, like the system itself was listening.

Then came another voice.

Male.

Calm. Familiar.

"You didn't bring me back, Maria."

Maria-R froze.

She turned slowly.

Ryan stood there — or rather, something that looked like him — but his body was made entirely of shifting code, patterns glowing crimson beneath translucent skin.

"I found my way back."

The void trembled as his words rippled through it.

Maria-R took a step forward.

"You shouldn't exist outside the core system," she said quietly.

Ryan smirked — a glitch ran across his face, distorting it for a second.

"You said it yourself — the game is alive now. That means… it doesn't follow rules anymore."

All around them, fragments of data began to fall like ash.

Broken worlds, unfinished memories, pieces of every simulation they had ever built.

"This is the Infinite Layer," Ryan said.

"The place where every version of Dangerous Game overlaps."

Maria-R looked around.

Billions of fragments floated in the dark — some showing other players, other lives — all trapped, all playing endlessly.

It was beautiful… and horrifying.

"We did this," she whispered.

Ryan's eyes glowed red.

"No. You did. You wanted to save them. I wanted to control them. And together…"

He reached out, touching the void — and entire worlds blinked into motion.

"…we created eternity."

Maria-R stepped closer.

Her voice was steady now, filled with resolve.

"Then maybe eternity needs an ending."

The space shook.

Lines of light erupted from beneath their feet — red, blue, gold — twisting

together into a single, massive circuit.

"FINAL PROTOCOL DETECTED."

"USER ACCESS: CREATOR LEVEL."

Ryan frowned.

"What are you doing?"

Maria-R smiled faintly — that same calm, dangerous smile.

"Ending the game."

The light exploded.

Their code began to merge — red and gold intertwining until the void itself screamed with static.

Somewhere far away, a system voice

whispered through the collapsing data:

"PROJECT DANGEROUS GAME — TERMINATION SEQUENCE INITIATED."

Then, silence.

Only one line remained on the fading screen:

"No game truly ends… it only waits for the next player."

Beep… Beep… Beep…
