Ned's face darkened. After a moment, he tried to suppress his anger:
"If you still can't speak clearly about what happened between us, then you're still running away! And you already know very well what the consequences of running away are."
The two of them were so absorbed in their conversation that they didn't notice someone had been eavesdropping at the door the whole time.
"Fine, then I'll tell you the reason I came back to London." Sophie turned around, avoiding his eyes. "There's only one reason—I came back for Uncle Jonathan. That's it, plain and simple. As for what happened between us in the past, and whatever feelings I had for you… those things are already four years old. Time is the best medicine. No matter how intense the feelings once were, they've long since faded and been forgotten with the passing of time."
"That's it?" A layer of frost gradually covered his face. "That's all you want to say to me?"
