Xein sighed and closed his eyes briefly before opening them as he looked at the ceiling of his room.
"System, is there any other things I should know?"
[Yes, there is a recent change made by the admins a few thousand years ago; to make the assessment of the candidates' abilities clearer to themselves, a sort of status screen, similar to those in the video games you had in your world, was created for convenience.]
"Video games?"
[Let me explain...]
Spending most of his life locked up in an orphanage and in prison, Xein wasn't exactly knowledgeable at these kinds of things; he knows common appliances and computers, for he commonly found them in the orphanage and had some moments to use the computers secretly.
The Orphanage also had a library of sorts, with Xein being the 'favorite', he was freely allowed to enter and read the books in there, and those books that he read served as his only form of entertainment for most of his life.
Books of the sci-fi genre were especially his favorite; however, he had no idea about the common trend of the times that happened on the internet.
So he may have knowledge of classic games like Solitaire, Snake, or Tetris, but when it comes to games like RPGs, MOBAs, or any of the like, he's completely in the dark; due to this, the system took quite a while to explain it to him.
[Do you understand it now?]
"Uhm, ah, a little bit..."
[...]
"Hey! I didn't have the best life to learn about this stuff, alright?"
[*Sigh*]
"Did you just sigh?"
[It's only your imagination, Master Xein.]
[Anyways, as I've said, the status screen is an assessment of your capabilities. In consideration of your lack of knowledge, I've decided to reconfigure it to suit you.]
[...Stupid Idiot.]
The last words spoken by the system didn't show up as hologram text, and its volume was low enough for the still confused Xein to not hear about it.In the next moment, a small holographic screen appeared in front of Xein, laying out only a few lines.
[Name: Xein Johannes
Title: None
Power: None
Physical Level: 15
Mental Level: 13
Assessment: An idiot who can't understand video games.]
The other information didn't really bother Xein, but seeing the words written in the Assessment section made him frown.
"Hey System, what's up with that assessment?"
[As the Power and Title section is still none, I will have only explained the Physical and Mental Level section for now.]
"Did you just ignore—"
[The physical level section is just that—it's the overall total of your physical capability from strength, speed, endurance, and any others relating to physical capability. For a healthy adult, their common level ranges from 9 to 11.]
"He—"
[The mental level, on the other hand, is tied to one's mental fortitude, intelligence, and wisdom; it does not necessarily equate to knowledge, but knowing more certainly does impact this section. Same as before, a mentally sane adult will have a mental level of 9-11.]
"..."
As Xein continued to be ignored and interrupted by the system, he shook his head, and decided not to press any further.
"Hey System, is it possible to bring things from this room outside?"
[It is not, Master Xein, with the exception of custom-made clothing; the moment you take any other thing from this room outside, it will immediately disintegrate into nothingness.]
[Also, using any of the tools provided by the room to inflict harm on others or yourself is not allowed, as it will disintegrate if you do.]
[Some things like weapons cannot be created, nor can dangerous and harmful substances like poison; there are some items that bypass this, but the moment they are used for harm, they will automatically disappear.]
[Any act of violence conducted in the rooms, or any other place, that is not during the stage of a WRS game is not allowed; if you violate this rule, you will be punished or, worse, be eliminated depending on the Admins. The only exception to this rule is during consented events like a spar.]
'Hmmm, though it's meant to protect others from harm outside of the competition, this kind of rule can be easily exploited...'
"… provoking others outside of the game to make them move first, resulting in them being punished or eliminated, will definitely be a used tactic."
[It's impressive that you can think of this, Master Xein, yet you still can't understand video games.]
'Was that a backhanded compliment?'
[It is not.]
'Stop reading my mind.'
Xein sighed at the system's remarks.
'Even though the system has that robotic voice, it certainly doesn't feel like a robot...'
'Speaking of which.'
"By the way, when I was hyperventilating, I noticed that your voice changed into that of a woman. What was that about?"
[...]
[I determined that using a different voice will aid in calming you down as such I only did what needed to be done, Master Xein.]
Though the short pause bothered Xein quite a bit, he simply ignored it and thanked the system for what it did for him.
"Thank you."
[It is nothing, Master Xein.]
[Would you like to set that voice as default from now on?]
"Do what you want."
[Default voice changed.]
Xein sighed as his eyes started to grow heavy, fatigue catching up to him. He let out a yawn as he looked around and, with a command from his mind, turned off the lights in his room.
"Hey System, I can't keep calling you just 'System,' right? Do you have a name I can call you by?"
[...]
The system didn't respond, and the silence just continued; only after a few minutes did the system finally reply.
[Q (Kyu)]
*Snores*
[*Sigh*]
[Goodnight, Master Xein.]
[...Idiot.]
The last words spoken by Q didn't form into any holographic text, and Xein, unaware of this, slept through the night comfortably for the first time in a long while.
