Disappointment settled in my chest when Karl mentioned his late patrol shift. Instead of marking me, he pressed a tender kiss to my lips and tucked me into bed alone.
The rest was probably what I needed anyway. Even without him beside me, I found myself wrapped in his sheets, choosing to stay in his room for the night. Having that space to myself felt surprisingly good. I hadn't realized how desperately I craved solitude until I had it. Sleep came slowly, my thoughts drifting toward territory I knew was dangerous - our future together. Not the fairy tale romance part, but the real stuff. My career. Living arrangements. The logistics of this impossible situation.
The guys would never let me return to my little house, the one I barely had time to call home. Not with hunters lurking in the shadows. Deep down, I knew they were protecting me and Warren, but that didn't stop me from yearning for my own sanctuary.
