Sallie's POV
I'd been aware of Everly's furtive glances for a while now, though since she hadn't brought anything up, I figured it wasn't my place to pry. Still, I hadn't anticipated she'd ask about this particular topic.
I stayed quiet for a beat. Rather than addressing her question directly, I simply replied, "That's behind me now."
Survival was my only focus these days. Whether I'd moved past old wounds hardly seemed relevant anymore.
Everly appeared to grasp the subtext in my response. Her lips parted as though she might speak, but she held her tongue.
With Elisabeth's situation finally handled, I felt an enormous burden slide off my back.
Yet another weight still crushed down on my chest.
Johan, who'd sworn he'd be back before Levi' birthday, had vanished without a trace.
Just two days ago, I'd gotten Johan on the phone. He'd assured me he was already heading home and would definitely arrive by the following day.
