Sallie's POV
Johan's tone carried a gravity that suggested he'd weighed every word. "Something's off. I'll fill you in when I return, but it's about Jill—"
Click. The sharp sound from the doorway cut through the night's silence like a blade.
I jerked back instinctively, my hand shooting out to grab the scissors I kept beside my bed.
Seeing Jill in the doorway, I lowered the weapon but stayed tense. "Why are you here?"
Jill caught my jumpy response, a flicker of intrigue crossing her face. Since when had this pampered princess developed such sharp reflexes?
She didn't push the matter. Instead, she put on that innocent mask of hers. "I just wanted to chat with you about something, Sallie. The door was open, so I walked right in. You're not upset with me, are you?"
I had no idea how long she'd been lurking there or what she might have overheard. But I knew one thing for certain—I had locked that door.
Securing myself in private spaces was second nature to me now.
