"Mr. Howard, I understand what you're getting at, but you're the heir of the Howard family while I'm nobody special. We're from different worlds," I said.
The faith I'd shown during Lionel's so-called rescue act crumbled. I spoke flatly, "Even if you're fine with it, your family sure won't be."
Lionel seemed thrown by my sudden change in tone.
His smile turned gentler. "Don't stress about it. My parents don't meddle in my love life."
Sensing I might still have doubts, he pressed on, "My parents would adore someone as gorgeous, caring, and resilient as you."
I finally let myself smile. "Really? Then you'll have to introduce me when you get the chance." I needed that opportunity to find out what they'd done to Andy and whether they felt any remorse.
Lionel hid whatever he was really thinking behind that tender smile. "Absolutely. I'll bring you home when the moment's right."
