Johan's harsh, letdown stare hit Webster like a physical blow. Webster vaguely remembered a time when his faith in Sallie had been stronger than even his trust in Zora. 'So why am I doubting Sallie now, with zero proof?'
Watching Webster's blank look, Johan released a weary breath. "Webster, after Ms. Noah got taken, you all jumped to blame Sallie, buried the story, and stressed about Ms. Noah. Why didn't anyone think to use common sense?
"The Noah Family stationed countless bodyguards around Ms. Noah. What made her suddenly send them all away? And what was she doing in that sketchy part of town?"
Webster stood frozen, unable to speak for several beats. He wasn't the sharpest student, but he wasn't stupid either. Anger and embarrassment churned in his chest. 'Why hadn't I asked these questions before?'
For once, instead of automatically backing Jill when she played victim, Webster started digging quietly. Sallie had no clue about Webster's undercover work.
