Ryker's eyes locked onto Ava's, his expression serious and urgent. "Ava, I need to tell you something," he said, his voice low and husky. "There's been a threat to your safety. I'm not sure who's behind it, but I know you're not safe here."
Ava's heart skipped a beat as she felt a shiver run down her spine. The den's warm atmosphere seemed to dissipate, replaced by a sense of unease. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ryker's jaw clenched, his eyes burning with intensity. "The only way to ensure your safety is to...mate with you," he said, his voice rough with emotion. "It's the only way to protect you from those who would seek to harm you through me."
Ava's mind reeled as she processed his words. Mate? As in...the physical act? She felt a flush rise to her cheeks, but Ryker's expression was dead serious.
"I won't let anything happen to you, Ava," he said, his voice softening. "I'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe."
Ava's heart was racing, her thoughts in turmoil. She didn't know what to say or do. Part of her was drawn to Ryker, but another part was hesitant. Could she really trust him?
"Okay," she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ryker's eyes flashed with relief, and he pulled Ava into his arms. "I'll take care of you," he whispered, his breath tickling her ear.
As they hugged, Ava felt a sense of safety and security wash over her. But she couldn't shake off the feeling that she was in over her head.
