Chapter 94: Sightseeing in the Sky
Skypiea - Upper Yard (God's Island)
Dark clouds smothered the island, hanging low like a heavy curtain.
A jagged bolt of lightning tore the sky apart, slamming into the ground with a deafening CRACK!, illuminating the thousands of people kneeling before the shrine.
"All hail the Omnipotent God—Lord Enel!"
The people of Skypiea pressed their foreheads into the cloud-ground, trembling. Not a single person dared to look up.
High atop the shrine, on a throne wreathed in golden lightning, Enel lounged. He was shirtless, his long earlobes hanging to his chest, his posture lazy. He looked every bit the king of thunder.
He flicked a finger, and a tiny spark of lightning jumped, like a nascent divine punishment.
"Today's faith..." he drawled, his voice dripping with mockery, "is barely adequate."
His eyes were half-closed, a cruel, empty smile on his lips.
This place, once a paradise, was now a kingdom of terror ruled by lightning.
Two months ago, Enel and his four priests had stormed the shrine. His lightning had swept the island, crushing the former "God," Gan Fall, and his guards in an instant. Gan Fall had barely escaped, his whereabouts unknown.
Then, hell began.
Rebels were struck down by lightning, their charred bodies hung outside the shrine as a warning. The Shandian warrior camps were destroyed one by one, the survivors forced into hiding. Any voice that questioned "God's Will" was silenced by a bolt from the blue.
"God does not require questions," Enel's voice echoed in their nightmares. "Only obedience."
To solidify his rule, Enel had created the "Trials of God"—deadly games in the forest where survival was a cruel joke.
If one person disobeyed, their entire family paid the price.
Enel was erasing Skypiea's history. He forced the people to mine dials and cloud-iron to build his great ark, Maxim, intending to fly to the "Endless Vearth" (the Moon). He burned the ancient texts, destroyed the murals, and sought to wipe the memory of the Golden City, Shandora, from existence.
He wanted a world with no history, no dissent—only God.
His four priests ruled the island with an iron fist, monitoring everything through his "Mantra" (Observation Haki):
Gedatsu (Trial of Swamp, 50% survival rate)
Satori (Trial of Spheres, 10% survival rate)
Shura (Trial of String, 3% survival rate)
Ohm (Trial of Iron, 0% survival rate)
In the oppressive silence of the shrine, hurried footsteps approached.
A priest rushed in, falling to one knee. "Lord Enel! An unidentified warship has appeared near Angel Island!"
Enel slowly opened his eyes. Lightning danced in his golden pupils.
"A warship...?"
He stepped down from his throne, his golden staff tapping the floor. BOOM! Lightning snakes slithered across the room.
"What ants... dare to intrude upon God's domain?"
Enel grinned. "However... I am in need of new toys."
Thunder rumbled as his voice filled the hall. "Prepare the Trials."
"Tomorrow, let these foolish invaders taste 'God's Wrath.'"
Angel Island - Cloud Beach
The Marine warship sat quietly in the sea of clouds, surrounded by mist.
Roy ordered the crew to stand guard, then led Ace, Luffy, Zoro, Kuina, and Law onto the legendary Sky Island.
"Whoa! The clouds are so soft! It's like cotton candy!" Luffy bounced on the cloud-ground, springing up and down.
"Luffy! Don't wander off!" Ace yelled, but Luffy was already gone.
Just as they were about to chase him, a squad of men in white uniforms and berets appeared, blocking their path. The White Berets.
"Halt, Blue Sea dwellers!" Captain McKinley barked. "Entry to Angel Island requires a fee. 1 billion Extol!"
"Entry fee?" Ace frowned, a flame sparking in his palm. "Never heard of it."
Zoro's hand drifted to his swords.
The tension spiked. But Roy just smiled, putting a hand on both their shoulders. He pulled a heavy bag of coins from his coat and tossed it to McKinley.
"Of course, of course. A small gift for the visit~"
McKinley caught the bag, weighed it, and nodded, satisfied. "Wise choice. You may pass."
As the patrol left, Ace glared at Roy. "That was extortion! And you just paid it?"
Roy shrugged. "Why not? It wasn't my money."
"Huh?"
Everyone stared at him.
Roy leaned in, whispering, "I swiped that bag off them just now~"
"..."
Everyone was speechless.
Kuina put her face in her hand. "Mr. Roy... please don't be a bad influence..."
Entering Angel Island, they were immediately captivated.
Buildings made of cloud-bricks lined the streets. Shell wind chimes tinkled in the breeze. People with small wings on their backs walked gracefully through the town.
"Look! They really have wings!" Luffy pointed at a passing girl.
"So Sky People really are different..." Ace marveled.
Zoro ignored the scenery, zeroing in on a tavern sign. "Hey, let's check that place out."
"You're underage! No drinking!" Kuina scolded him.
Just then, a gentle voice spoke up. "Is this your first time on Angel Island?"
A blonde girl with small wings approached them, holding a small harp-like instrument. She smiled warmly. "I'm Conis. Do you need a guide?"
Kuina stepped forward politely. "Hello, Miss Conis. We are indeed new here. Could you show us around?"
"Of course," Conis beamed.
With Conis leading the way, they explored the island.
Dial Workshop: Conis explained the local "Dial" technology. Luffy and Ace's eyes nearly popped out looking at the Breath Dials and Impact Dials.
Cloud Cafe: They tried "Cloud Fish" and "Sky Fruit." Luffy and Ace ate enough for ten people, shocking the chef.
Angel Plaza: A statue of a winged angel stood in the center. "This is our guardian symbol," Conis explained.
History Museum: When they arrived, the doors were shut tight. A sign read: Temporarily Closed.
Conis looked embarrassed. "Lord Enel ordered a reorganization... many exhibits were removed. It should reopen soon."
Law's eyes narrowed. He noticed the slight tremor in Conis's voice when she said "Enel."
As the sun set, Conis walked them back to the cloud beach.
"I hope you enjoyed Angel Island," she said.
"Thank you, Miss Conis," Kuina said.
As Conis turned to leave, Law spoke up. "Miss Conis. One question."
"Yes?"
Law looked her in the eye. "Who is... Enel?"
Conis's face went pale. Her lips trembled.
"He... is God," she whispered, terrified. "Please... never speak his name aloud. It brings disaster..."
She bowed quickly and hurried away, fear radiating from her.
The group stood in silence.
Law looked up at the distant, towering shrine, wreathed in lightning. "It seems... this island's secrets are deeper than we thought."
