"Choose between your award and your children?" I crush the threatening letter. "There's no choice. My children always come first."
Ethan reads the letter again. "What if it's a bluff? What if they're just trying to control you through fear?"
"What if it's not a bluff? What if I go to Paris and come home to dead children?"
"We increase security. Hire more guards. Protect them while you're gone."
"No amount of security stopped Chen from being poisoned. No amount of guards prevented Morrison from taking them. I won't risk it."
I email the Fashion Council that night. Decline the nomination. Decline the award. Say I'm honored but family comes first.
Sophie calls immediately. "You're crazy! This is the biggest honor in fashion! You can't turn it down!"
"I can and I did."
"Because of an anonymous threat? Maya, you can't let terrorists win!"
"They're not terrorists. They're murderers who already poisoned one of my children. I'm not giving them another chance."
