Meryl's POV
The question echoed in my mind like a broken record.
"Mom, is he my daddy?"
Gavin had asked it so innocently, his small voice cutting through me like glass. Even now, minutes later, those words wouldn't stop playing in my head.
"Gavin," I whispered, looking down at my son as he stood beside the bed.
My heart felt like it was splitting apart. But I forced myself to smile, even though it felt weak and hollow.
"Sweetheart, I'll explain everything to you later. Just not right now, okay?"
His big eyes blinked up at me, filled with confusion that made my chest ache.
I swallowed hard, trying to keep my voice steady. "Do you not love Mommy anymore? Is that why you only want to find your daddy?"
Gavin's face twisted with worry, like my question hurt him. "No, Mommy! I love you so much. Please don't be sad. I won't ask about daddy anymore, I promise."
I pulled him against me and pressed a kiss to his forehead. My fingers ran through his soft curls as I fought back tears.
