Serena
My legal team called me on a Tuesday afternoon. I was sitting by the window, reading one of the books Pedro got me. It was a romance book about a heiress who couldn't be with the man she loved.
"Serena," my lawyer said, "there are two weeks left before the divorce is finalized. You can't keep avoiding court. You have to be present for the final hearing."
I didn't answer right away. I knew the time would come when I had to be present. The universe had been kind enough to give me the grace to evade my appearance in court but it was time for me to show up and I knew I wouldn't be able to evade it this time.
She continued, calm but firm. "The judge needs both parties there. We've pushed this as far as we can. I'll send you the date and time."
"Okay," I said quietly.
The call ended. I sat there for a long time after that, phone still in my hand. Two weeks. I didn't want to see Damien. I didn't trust myself to stay calm if I did.
Two weeks passed faster than I expected.
